Clarify which version number increments allowed by licence

You are correct. They could make their elua a lot more clearer. To have both the professional and personal elua versions all in one is just crazy.

Because thatā€™s how Topaz explained it when the current system was introduced about four years ago. I canā€™t supply a link without going trawling for it.

My Photo AI licence expired on 24 September, but yesterday I downloaded, installed and have successfully used the newest version which was only released yesterday. It also shows in my account as the latest version I own. The system currently works exactly as I described it and has done so for the last four years so I will be able to download and use all versions to 3.2.x. It does seem, however, that changes are afoot - but not yet.

Hi Andy, can confirm what @PaulM mentioned, since the last version that you own is 5.3.3, you will be able to update all 5.3.x versions. Once the first or middle numbers are updated, you will no longer have access to update to those unless you purchase a new upgrade plan.

Hi Margaux, thanks for the clarification. Surely such generosity by Topaz should therefore be heavily advertised rather than being hidden away in your reply amongst dozens of others? I will keep a link for posterity so it is not lost in the annals of history.

Thanks.

Andy

If you by any chance you do get an answer form Topaz I would appreciate if you could post itā€¦

Thanks for also taking an interest. I got a reply from Margaux at Topaz, which perhaps you have seen already as itā€™s just above here. So, at least we now know for sure.

I wonder if there is a reason why itā€™s not ā€œofficiallyā€ documented? Topaz want users to extend their licence ASAP so they get more money quicker. Well, Iā€™m glad Iā€™m not falling for that.

IF they offered a discount for extending immediately after the year, then I might think about it.

Thanks.

so to sum it up, you are protected on all minor versions?

Thatā€™s right, changes to the last number only, i.e. x.y.Z

Thanks.

Andy

Can someone from Topaz please look at the screenshot Iā€™ve provided and explain what exactly Iā€™m supposed to do here. My version is 5.2.3 and the update window clearly has updates for my version and 4 NOT INCLUDED. However the button at the bottom says ā€œrenew licenseā€ which I assume will take me to the payment screen. Also the button at the top right hand side of the app now says ā€œupgradeā€ instead of update which I assume will also take me to the payments screen. Iā€™m guessing that Iā€™m stuck with the version that I have (ā€¦and the bugs). Some clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

In your case, Iā€™m afraid youā€™re out of luck as there are no intervening minor updates available between 5.2.3 and 5.3.x. (I seem to recall there might have been one but was ā€œwithdrawnā€ as it really was that bad, or perhaps it was among a previous major version Iā€™m thinking of).

So unless you really do want to pay to upgrade now (rather than wait for a decent version to upgrade to) I would ā€œsnoozeā€ updates with with the longest period available (is it 6 months?) so you wonā€™t be bothered again with this ā€œnagā€ screen.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply Andy. ā€œDecent versionā€? Weā€™ve never had one that I can recall. Itā€™s been like a box of chocolatesā€¦ You never know what new bugs youā€™re going to get when you click that update button. Iā€™m now stuck with a version that puts black bars on the sides of the videos. So Iā€™m supposed to PAY to have this fixed I guess. I think Iā€™ll be ā€˜snoozingā€™ for a long time. Whilst it does a great job of upscaling (full credit there), the ui is a bit of a p.i.t.a.

I think you can get rid of the nag screen by a relatively simple journey down the registry.

For Mac users, itā€™s not quite as simple as you need an app capable of editing binary PLIST files. Fortunately, I have Appleā€™s Xcode installed.

The file containing the settings is:

~/Library/Preferences/com.topazlabs.Topaz Video AI.plist

and the setting to change in this case is:

snoozeUpdateDlgTill

and change the date to some point far enough ahead so youā€™ll never be bothered again.

By strange co-incidence, Iā€™ve found the need to do exactly this recently due to a bug in the Mac version of TVAI where the snooze value isnā€™t being saved correctly. So no matter what snooze time you choose, itā€™s ignored! Naturally, Iā€™ve raised this issue in the bugs category.

Thanks.
