A while back I bought Megapixel etc that I hoped would enhance a large collection of old (mostly) 35mm negatives and slides scanned using a Nikon 5000ED 35mm slde/neg scanner. As part of the 12 month support I also received the first version of Photo AI.
Even after fiddling with the adjustments a lot, apart from a slight improvement in sharpness the results were to be honest disappointing. For example, some negatives/slides had what seemed to be slight imprefections in the coating, like faint ridges and Topaz just accentuated them. Photo AI also didn’t seem to improve out-of-focus negs.
A few months ago I found a thread on these forums saying that Topaz products’ AI was trained for digital images, and might not work so well for scans from analog film. I don’t remember seeing this in product details at the time (or today), otherwise I may have decided not to go ahead with the purchase - I have not got value for money from it so far. Unsurprisingly I won’t be purchasing additional support or an upgrade.
Is there any prospect of Photo AI or a new separate product being well trained for improving scans from film?
