About trying Topaz Video AI

Hi,

Is there Topaz Video AI free trail online? So I can upload my old video to the website for testing. Rather than install their free trial version on PC.
Thanks

Regards

No, there is no web version, it is standalone software only.

What’s the problem with installing the trial on your PC?
As this is the only method to not only see the quality of the result but also get an impression of the performance on your specific hardware and possible issues.

Hi all,

Thanks for your advice.

I’ll test installing the software on a Linux VM of Oracle VirtualBox. In case of problem I just delete the VM
Hardware
CPU: AMD Ryzen7 8 cores
RAM: 32G onboard
HD: 2TB PCIe 3.0 SSD
Monitor: Dell 32" 4K display

Regards

You need a GPU to run this software, and it probably won’t work in a VM, unless the VM supports GPU passthrough.

Yes, It supports GPU passthrough.
If fail I can get a spare 120G SSD for this test.
The advantage using a VM for testing is in case of problem I just delete the VM and create another new VM.

You didn’t tell which GPU you have. Without a dedicated strong GPU you won’t be happy with TVAI…

No problem.
In case unable to get it done on VM. I’ll install a 120G SSD for this test. I suppose Topaz works on Ubuntu 22.04 Linux?

I think you going the wrong direction by attempting to test TVAI with a VM, you probably going to be so disappointed with the performance that you will ditch this tool while it might very well be a false positive disappointment. there are so many virtualization drivers in between that you would get the wrong impression , if it even would work.
You should install it directly on your hardware running your Windows/MacOS. what could go wrong? you can uninstall it at any time. this tool is not such an invasive tool to the OS, it’s actually one of those programs that hardly has any registry entries , and is installed in 2 folders on drive C. very easy to uninstall efficiently.

Not natively, although you can get it to run on Wine. But it will only run on CPU.

Hi eh117,

Thanks for your advice.
I have Windows 11 VM here. I have installed Topaz Video AI v4.3.0 on it several days before but unable to get it to work

In what way is it not working? Is it not exporting, not launching at all, not installing, etc?

You mentioned that you are using VirtualBox. How was the network bridge to your host setup? Like many other desktop-based AI programs, Topaz Video AI requires network access by default, so if you transferred the installer to your VM locally and then immediately tried to process something, you’ll have problems.

Also, I’d recommend starting with a v3 installer first before attempting to run v4. 4 has all kinds of problems and the other versions have better compatibility.

I once tried installing TVAI on a Parallels Windows on ARM VM and it wouldn’t install because of missing AVX support :-/

After having imported a .mp4 video, what shall I do next? Just click → Export?

Please refers to screenshot attached.

VM is connected to Internet.

You should of course select an enhancement plus maybe an upscaling option.

This looks like a low-res source. With that kind of material I’d suggest starting with the Iris or Proteus models. There you can play with the settings to adjust the output to your preferences.

P.S.: I now saw that the input file allegedly is 1080p - but it doesn’t look like that at all, more like 640x480 or lower looking at the low res unsharp text. Has this been enlarged before?

Hi @jo.jo,
Thanks for your advice. Pls advise how to start Iris or Proteus models. Topaz is completely new to me.
Yes, this file has been treated before and was trimmed from the original video which was ripped on Sony V8 tape by a shop here providing ripping service.
The original file is about 1 hour and 30 min duration.

right beside the preview there are several options found. just turn some on and make your adjustments.

Since you’re only testing the VM, I would not do anything heavy. Run one of the enhancement models at 1.0 scale (or, in other words, don’t change the resolution). Try using Proteus with parameters set to Auto. Also, set the bitrate to Dynamic-Low or use a lower constant rate for the test. H.264 encoder should be fine.

And, if you go to File > Preferences > Processing, which processor is it using?

Hi @Imo
It seems nothing showing up on “Preview”

In this case it might be better to first downsize the video (e.g. with handbrake, should be very fast) and only then upscale it in TVAI 2x with Iris or Proteus.
Otherwise you would need MUCH more time and get a really large file, because it would end up as 4k video but without being near to 4k from the amount of detail.
A bit as it is now: formally 1080p resolution but details only like a bad SD.

So I guess my workflow on this would be:
Handbrake with halving the resolution in both axes. Then load the resulting video into TVAI. There it could be good approach to start with the “Upscale to HD resolution” preset

I would only turn on stabilization and Deblur if really necessary. Upscaling 2x automatically enables “Enhancement” where you can then chose the used model:

The preset uses Proteus which isn’t bad at all - but I mostly prefer Iris.
