I understand that Topaz releases are constantly evolving and that there are some perpetual frustrations in these forums, but I wanted to mention in passing just a few successes I’ve had since buying Topaz on Black Friday.
-
I upscaled some Christmas DVDs with a combination of Proteus and Iris. My wife said that “It’s a Wonderful Life” has never looked this good.
-
I upscaled some episodes of “The Wonder Years” but added grain to keep that vintage look. Again, with a few minor issues (mostly involving background faces), it looks amazing compared to the original.
-
I started converting some footage that I am editing into 30 fps, with the goal of combining 24 fps and 29 fps footage seamlessly. After trying several methods and applications, I found Topaz’s Apollo model to be far and away the best. Every motion is buttery smooth.
As everyone here knows, it’s tedious to run things through Topaz, but I let it work overnight on most files and find them beautifully finished in the morning.
I’d love for these models to get more efficient and for them to get a little more precise about those background faces and general foreground vs background, but what I’ve been able to do in just a few short weeks is amazing. Thank you and keep up the good work.
The main reason I bought TVAI was to upscale my DVDs of the original Star Wars trilogy to FHD.
They are erroneously put onto the DVDs as widescreen in fullscreen aspect ratio.
Anyway, no, TVAI did not enhance those perfectly, but it did make them look better for sure. Obviously processed by an AI though. Where the real success came in was when I was directed to the historical preservation projects for it.
TVAI works perfectly for any movie I have used it on that is 1280 by 720 resolution. Specifically Proteus Auto and Gaia.
DVDs that are noise free come out very good with those same models, but Manual mode is usually better for Proteus. That’s usually mostly computer animation videos.
For old grainy cartoons, Artemis Medium Quality does an amazing job. It’s not perfect, but neither are the drawings in those cartoons. I’m talking about old Hanna Barbra cartoons like Smurfs and Scooby-Doo.
For all the other movies and shows I have processed with TVAI, they’re pretty okay. There are things that I notice in them that I don’t love, from time to time. I’ll probably re-run them all in Proteus 4 when that comes out. If it turns out to be any good at it.
I count them as a success if my wife doesn’t point anything out in them. She doesn’t care about visual quality at all. She’s the person that will pick the DVD out of the Blu-ray DVD combo case and watch it because there is no difference to her. So if she notices something’s not right, it’s really bad.
