I am still finding it difficult to control the gradient mask … I find it seems to flip around alot and thus I can’t seem to control its angle and hardness … is there something I am missing … is there a tute available (or can there be one made) that clearly show how to control this feature.

I have the same problem with it. It’s like trying to herd cats.

It take some getting use to but two things that will help. 1. Make sure the pointer hand shows over the center box. If you click the mouse before the hand shows then it will flip the mask bars around easily. 2. Once you grab the red or green center box drag it apart (for a wide gradient) before tilting it . If all the bars are close together then it will tilt fast, like Mond said, herding cats. This part should be slowed.
