That documentation page is quite old, and appears to have last been updated prior to the 3.0.7 release. The web login flow became the only method for online authentication in that release.
You can find a more up to date set of documentation on our new docs site, here. One question though, was that link to the old documentation still on our site somewhere? I’d like to get it updated to go to the new documentation if you could point me to it.
