Topaz Video AI Beta v4.0.5.1.b

Hello everyone,

We have a new beta available for testing.

4.0.5.1.b

Changelog from 4.0.4

  • New frame interpolation model, Apollo SR v1!
    • Apollo SR is our first scale-recurrent Frame Interpolation model. This method of calculating motion works much more accurately with high resolution inputs, and should resolve many of the tiling artifacts seen in single-level models.
    • This improvement in efficiency and interpolation accuracy also allows to offer up to 16x slowmo!
  • Adds options to stabilize rotation, horizontal panning, vertical panning, and/or zooming.
  • Switching inputs no longer loses previews.
  • Fixed play button taking extremely long to respond.
  • Fixed player hanging app indefinitely bug.
  • Fixes for default constant bitrate values in preferences.
  • Fix for “open in external player” failing.
  • Fix issue where entering custom values into text boxes doesn’t hold.
  • Simplify presets UI.
  • Added ‘Auto’ & ‘Relative to Auto’ support in plugin!
  • Video player no longer stutters through previews playback.
  • Video player no longer stutters when exiting previews.
  • Video player can handle larger preview load in timeline.

Known Issues

  • Switching inputs can cause crashes around preview videos.
  • Slow-motion playback failing across two previews with different slow-motion factors playing at the same time.
  • Looping previews has a stutter.
  • Generating a preview inside another preview regenerates the overlapping area.
  • Inconsistent “Preview X frames” enable status.
  • Rotation w/ previews will not be rotated.

  • Apollo SR may be slow and use large amounts of RAM on large input videos.
  • Apollo SR may fail on inputs smaller than 640 pixels.

I am not a native English speaker, I am Romanian, but I will try to translate a Romanian joke.

"A farmer goes to an animal fair to buy a horse. There he finds someone selling one. The farmer asks the seller:

  • Does this horse have strength?
  • No, sir!
  • Is it good for breeding?
  • No, sir!
  • Is it healthy?
  • No, sir!
  • Maybe it’s good for riding?
  • No, sir!
  • Well, then, why did you bring this horse to the fair?
  • To make him a laughingstock!"

Not in vain did I try to tell this joke, hoping it would be understood. So, this beta has a bug that makes it like the horse above. THE PREVIEW FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK. That means the original material is displayed after processing. It works with an external player (meaning it is processed). But if I can’t compare the original and processed material, what’s the point of the preview?

Edit 1: I retract the statements above… partially. After modifying the parameters from a previously saved preset, things seem to be working normally.

I still get major lag before videos play or loop.
Iris all models Estimate is broken, does nothing at all. If you try to hit estimate, you can no longer do previews or exports, it just sits there doing nothing.
After a few restarts of the app, I can say that Apollo SR V1 is totally non-functional. It sits for a long time, then finally errors out.
Using normal Apollo v8 it will move forward, but looks like the incorrect frames in preview bug is back.

Hello,

We’re currently trying to narrow down the common factors for cases where the play button is delayed.

Could you post your CPU and GPU information? Thanks!

Sounds like this may have been a preset migration bug. If this persists in the stable release, definitely email us at help@topazlabs.com and we’ll look into it!

On Win10 when doing a manual estimate for Proteus or Iris parameters, it can sometimes take multiple attempts to get the estimate. Other times the parameters just go to zero in the UI.

Often when I generate a preview it is not shown automatically when ready: I have to click onto it in the preview list again! Even then the starting frame sometimes does not match the frame I selected for the preview to start. And I miss the option to keep only one preview in the preferences. :eyes:

Yeah, this is my lower end box, use mostly for testing or making stuff 50fps…
i7-6700k intel and a nvidia rtx 3070.

Apollo SR fails on my Macbook Pro M1. The video is 1280x720, running only Apollo SR from 29.97 fps to 59.94 - no other models.

No error message, but here are the logs.

Oh, F*** YES! I wanted this to be a thing since it was first introduced! Hopefully we can now get rid of the blurring out limbs, etc bug!

I REALLY wanted to try the Apollo SRv1 because of the many high speed and flashy stuff I work on… but it does not work at all for me :frowning:
Hope the new stability makes your day my man!!

Devs working hard on moving stuff forward, but to date I still feel 4.x has been alpha, not even beta. When half the gui does/did not work, models broken, live view broken, etc… it might not be ready for a prime time release… unless you a worthless AAA games maker :stuck_out_tongue:
Regardless, love to see so much progress happen weekly, and just hope we get to No Man’s Sky quality pretty soon. Keep it up guys!

Still error when running Apollo SRv1 on mac m1 max.
Still no auto estimation
Still no live preview
Still less functionality than the previous UI

I do close it for stop the preview processing, where is "stop Processing’?

it looks like Apollo SR is so big that there is no room for it with 16 GB Vram and it is swapped out to the RAM, hence the high load on the BUS.

And it seems to run only on the tensor cores.

Snort-cough-laughing at this, as it’s so true!

Yeah, I think this resembles an alpha than a beta too, stabilisation is working so far, I’ll have to do more tests, but at least THAT model is somewhat functional!

VAI 4051b crashes when I click from a preview in the Previews column to the original listed immediately above the preview.

System is M2 MBA, 24GB, 2TB, Ventura with all updates. Collected logs attached.

You forgot to add

  • we didn’t test this at all on MacOS (as it seems)…

Another beta where you do have to ask yourself how or more if at all this was tested on Apple Silicon devices

So I can confirm the reports of Apollo SR immediately bombing out with an error after the models was loaded - but not only this but also Apollo fast, Chronos and Chronos fast are broken.

Plus, the App crashes at exit.

And this on a M1 Pro as well as an M2 Ultra and both on Sonoma 14.1 and 14.2.

So,seriously: Who does the tests? Do you have Macs at all??

P.S.: Oh, and of course not to forget Iris still is SLOOOOOW.

For the frame interpolation, is there any way we can just get multipliers in addition to the pre-defined numbers? Or have a separate multiplier option? 23.976 doubled is 47.952 for example, and whereas it’s nice to be able to input the exact numbers manually, my sense is that a multiplier just like for the “Slow Motion” dropdown in the Frame Interpolation section would be great. Thank you for the improvements you keep making!

Please consider adding the option to do frame interpolation as a second pass after upscale/enhancement

Frame interpolation does not show the interpolated frames in the preview when advancing using the keyboard arrow keys or manually clicking on the advance frame icon. It only scrubs through the original frames. When moving the playhead manually with the mouse, the interpolated frames are shown.
