In the Preferences -> Application section, the warning about using old models looks like it’s in the wrong place. It’s placed below the Only Keep One Preview setting, not the Enable Previous Model Versions setting.
It’s not explained, what the Only Keep One Preview option does.
For anyone wondering, based on testing it seems having this setting enabled only allows one video preview to be kept per video. So if you try to create another preview for the video, the original preview gets deleted and removed from the UI.
It would be nice if settings had tooltips explaining them.
Bug report: The GUI is not automatically turning on the Enhancement module when an upscale is selected.
I tested this on and reproduced this issue on both macOS and Windows.
Notice how I’ve selected a “4x upscale” and it says The Enhancement filter has been enabled for high-quality upscaling. and yet the Enhancement filter hasn’t been enabled.
correct… that is what I would think if I would see this settings.
maybe it’s better to have a little “?” icon at the end of each option that pops a little overlay box describing the option in more details. like you have for the AI models, etc.
that will save you tons of support cases and complains… and preventing a mess in the settings menu putting a descriptions text embedded in the menu (like done for legacy models option).
Proteus v4 is still very blurry with loss of detail (like a layer of vaseline). Interestingly it seems to be worse on x2 and especially x1 scaling compared with x4. Sharpening does very little to correct this, probably because after the blurring, there is little detail left to actually sharpen.
Note: I have used the same video in every test done here. And I have uploaded the video to the Dropbox under “Rolling cat Proteus v4 test.zip”
Processing was done on a RTX 4090 on Windows 11.
2x Protues v4 has a tendency to “solidify” out of focus regions of the video making the upscaled video look worse. This issue is partially present with 4x Proteus v4, but it’s not as bad.
Along with that, small repeating pattern artifacts show up in the out of focus regions of the video when using 2x adn 4x Proteus v4, although they may not be visible on this site due to JPEG compression.
Notice how the out of focus leaves now seem to have “solid” edges making the upscaled result look worse.
1x Proteus v4 also seems to heavily degrade the quality of the video, making it look pixelated. 2x also shows this sort of issue, but upscaling is also being applied, kind of counteracting that.
Proteus v4 4x upscale also introduces small purple blotches in the green out of focus regions of this video. Although it mostly disappears with 4:2:0 chroma sub-sampling. And JPEG compression ont his site makes it basically invisible.
Yes I noticed the same (UPSCL x4), Blurry and sharpening slid has little to no effect…
To be fair they did state that x1, x2 of Prot’ 4 is not optimized " * For 1x and 2x upscale using Proteus V4, quality and speed might be suboptimal".
Next test I’ll do is Prot 4 x4 then Dione: DV it again to sharpen it… let’s see how this turns out
I dunno what to say (again), but the preview gets stuck shortly after the beginning of the processing and will not move on until the processing is completed, so it is hard to compare before and after during processing.
For comparing before- and after during processing i open the .mkv file while it’s being written to in VLC. Running 2 instances of VLC with source and target version of the movie. Never had a problem with the processing (e.g. Topaz being unable to write to the file, file corruption, …).
Presets made in earlier Beta versions did not apply the Enhancement toggle and settings. I had to recreate my presets with the latest version to get Enhancement to come on again with the preset selection.
This program is still randomly ruining videos with your topaz watermark, I’m getting pretty tired of it happening. Also not enjoying having to re-login the program on the 1st of the month. Since that means if your servers ever go down or you go out of business the program will stop working even though we’ve paid for it.
the better fix might be for it not to say it auto-turns-on the enhancement filter so if people want to do simple upscale in combo with other filters they can do so.
Hi everyone, thanks for your feedback so far. Proteus v4 at 1x and 2x are placeholders at this moment, and it is known to us that they are not up to the mark. These models will improve over the next few weeks.
Please test Proteus v4 at 4x and let us know your comments. Thanks.
