Topaz Studio | Transition Questions

How do refunds work relative to this shift? General guidance would be helpful.

Thanks!

If you read the full post the reasoning for the action is quite clear. Happy to answer questions here though - that wasn’t the reason.

Understood! So, can you explain how the refunds work. Is it full, or prorated based on when you ended support for new features?

We don’t have a formal policy here for the transition - in general if you request a refund you’ll lose access to the perpetual license of the product including all upgrades within the upgrade window after the refund completes. If you own an older version you’d retain access to only the latest upgrade window from that version. I’d recommend reaching out to support for more information on your case.

Is it within policy to document on the forum my discussions with service so others have an idea what to expect, or is that against forum policy? Sort of weird not to have a formal policy, and it would help clarify any confusion on the matter.

Thanks, I purchased that and set to autorenewal also, along with Topaz Video AI.

I think you need to be careful. If in 3 months Microsoft, Nvidia, etc. push an update that breaks Topaz products, you’ll be left with unusable software. If no further major updates are coming, a partial refund makes sense, but you’ll still need a subscription to future-proof against bugs. Maintenance-only updates should be considered at a reduced price for those who want to stay on their existing versions without moving to Studio.

That’s where a system snapshot and VMs come into place…

Maybe a specific example using a theoretical customer will explain the problem for you.

Mr. Smith purchased a perpetual license for Photo AI on August 1, 2025. The details of that purchase were that he would expect improved versions of Photo AI to be produced periodically, and that he could keep periodically downloading an improved version for the next 12 months and continue to use it PERPETUALLY.

What has happened instead is that Photo AI’s improvements have been frozen. It will not gain any new models or functionality ever again. Although Mr. Smith will have the TEMPORARY use of the new Topaz Studio software, it will expire on August 1, 2026 unless he keeps paying for a subscription. But he doesn’t want a subscription that he has to keep paying for in order to have software that works. Topaz Studio software will then no longer function, and he will then only have the use of the same 12-month-old non-improved version of Photo AI that was available to him originally.

He was given a TEMPORARY improvement rather than an improved version that he can use PERPETUALLY. Do you see the difference now?

Hi all, I put the refund request in with customer service and will share progress here. If I’m also banned, worry.

Snapshots and VMs are a workaround, but not a practical long-term solution for most people. Users expect their software to keep working with current OS and driver updates, not to have to lock down or virtualize their system. That’s why some form of reduced-cost maintenance updates makes sense for those not moving to Studio. Personally, I know a lot of people don’t like the path Topaz has chosen, but for me it works fine as long as there’s value added in Studio. I’ve been using Adobe Creative Cloud this way for years, and it doesn’t bother me as much because I’ve consistently seen value added by Topaz over the past 5 years, and I don’t see future developments disappointing me.

To be clear, we’ll still do our best here to maintain compatibility on the perpetual license apps, especially for the next 12 months in particular.

For what it’s worth I’m okay with the subscription as long as I get to keep my perpetual license for the products I own so in two years if I want to install 7.1.4 and use it I can.

I still rock the last version of Adobe Lightroom and probably will for several more years

A lot could change in 2-years. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Had a reply from Dakota at Topaz

Hope this helps

Thanks

Thanks for clarifying. That’s reassuring for the short term. I still think offering a reduced-cost ā€œmaintenance onlyā€ plan beyond the 12 months would be a good option for those who want to stick with their perpetual apps without moving to Studio, since long-term OS and driver changes are the real concern. Instead of processing refunds, why not give users a choice: if renewal is $99, offer a maintenance-only plan at $49. Users could either move to maintenance and get a partial refund, or stick with the full $99 and get access to the Studio app.

How do we shift from Video AI Pro to Video Pro? Will there be a link or something?

So has anyone changed to MAC OS Tahoe and tried to use PhotoAi if so are there any issues and which version are you using 4.0.3 or 4.0.4
I have been advised to wait until a patch for compatibility but how long will that be before it is useable on Tahoe
