Topaz Photo AI v2 crashes as a plugin (Affinity Photo)

Previous version of Topaz worked as a plug-in with Affinity Photo. Updated to version 2 today and plug-in crashes when it is executed. Error message “Topaz Photo AI cannot proceed. plug-in has crashed” Porgram works as a stand alone but not as a plug-in.

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Step 1
  2. Step 2
  3. Step 3

Topaz Photo AI [v1.x.x] on [Windows/Mac]
2023-09-08-16-05-12.tzlog (8.9 KB)

Fixed the problem. The software update did not replace the old plug-in with the new updated plug-in. Previous updates have not caused an issue but updating to 2.1.1 seems to create issues.

How did you fix it? Was it simply removing and adding the plugin again?

I couldn’t work out why this recent update made the program crash when accessed through Affinity Photo when the earlier updates did not. I eventually looked into the plug-in folder for Affinity Photo and noticed that the Topaz plug-in was showing as an early version number (1.7x and not version 2). I deleted it and copied over the plugin from the Topaz install folder. That plug-in showed version 2xx and it has worked since then.

Hi Mike. it sounds like you were having the same problem that I am experiencing with Topaz Photo AI v2.0.0 crashing when accessed from Affinity Photo however I am having trouble following your solution. I cannot find a folder under the Affinity Photo Folder for Plug-ins, could you please be more specific about the file path. The path I see is C: ,Program Files, Affinity, Photo then each of the following subfolders, 1 for each language, PhotoHelp, and Resources.
I have also looked under the Topaz Photo AI folder structure and although there is folder called ‘photo.lrdevplugin’ the only files there are file type lua.
I do note that Topaz AI v2.0.0 does work from the desk top and when accessed from the filters menu in photoshop.
Similarly I haven’t been able to find the Topaz Installer folder you mentioned can you advise where I might find it. Alternatively could you provide the files names for the plug-ins and I will do a search of my C: drive
Thanks
Terry

I found where Affinity Photo stores its plugins by going to edit then settings. Settings shows where affinity stores its (photoshop) plugin as well as the alternative of giving it the location of where it should search to find them. In my case Affinity has installed itself in C drive in the user folder under my user-name. In the Photo/2.0 folder there is another folder called plugins. In my case it had an old Topaz plugin (version 1.7x) and shortcuts to other plugins. To find the Topaz plugin I located where Topaz was installed. In my case Topaz installed itself in D drive under program files/TopazLabs LLC/Topaz Photo AI. In Topaz Photo AI there are more sub folders but at the bottom of the list of sub folders there are several dll files and 8BF files. I copied the TopazPhotoAI 8BF file and pasted it into the Affinity Photo plugin folder. Hope that helps.

Thank you Mike. Your solution fixed my problem also.
