The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System

A very small portion of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS). About half of the 800 mile long pipeline is above ground due to perma-frost. The zig-zag pattern of the line helps deal with the huge temperature range experienced by the system. TAPS is in its 40th year, far longer than the 25 years predicted for the system to remain operative.
