Starlight system check runs automatically on startup

Hi,

I’m running Topaz Video 1.5.0 on Windows with an NVIDIA GPU with 8GB VRAM.

Every time I launch the app, it triggers a full Starlight compatibility system check. This is unnecessary in my case because I exclusively use Starlight via cloud rendering — I do not use local processing at all.

Since my GPU doesn’t need to run Starlight locally, the local hardware check on every startup feels like unintended behavior. It’s disruptive and adds unnecessary wait time each time I open the app.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Launch Topaz Video 1.5.0
  2. Starlight system check runs automatically on startup
  3. This happens every single time, even though Starlight is only used via cloud

Expected behavior: The local system check should either be skipped or only run once when Starlight local processing is actually selected — not on every startup, and especially not for users who only use cloud rendering.

Please consider adding an option to disable the local Starlight system check, or at minimum only trigger it when local Starlight processing is actually being used.

Thanks!

Thank you for bringing this up and sharing the experience.

Passing it along to the devs to see what is going on, it should be that once you close the in-app checker after it runs, it should not launch again, you should just see the download button for the model.

Can you send the logs in from the app for their review? You can post them here or email them to the support team at help@topazlabs.com.

To gather logs, please select Help > Logging > Get Logs for Support and attach the zip file to your reply.

Here is a video to help with the steps of how to collect the logs.

This also happens for me every single time a move between source files and/or apply a preset. With the presets, this happens even while staying on the same source file and preset. Open source file, click the ‘preset 1’ button, Starlight Precise 2.5 system check pops up and I ‘x’ it out, click the ‘preset 1’ button, Starlight Precise 2.5 system check pops up and I ‘x’ it out, click the ‘preset 1’ button, Starlight Precise 2.5 system check pops up and I ‘x’ it out.

Running the check so it fails due to having only 8GB Ram, every time i click any preset, it brings up the failed results, and the dialogue loop like above continues but with results instead of the run system check prompt.

Yes, I would also very much like the ‘shame’ screen that I don’t have an Nvidia card. To make it worse, when you have a failed project that causes a lot of lag and the software crashes you COULD reload and hit ‘cancel’ when it tried to reload the project. Now that starlight pop-up screen hides the window with the cancel button and every time you click the X in the corner it pops back up before you have a chance to hit cancel. I finally had to go to the Documents and deleted the project that way to prevent the lagging load.

Just add a ‘Disable Starlight test on load’ option in preferences.

Ditto. It’s a colossal nuisance. It pops up not only at start up but every time I select a preset. Please allow us to turn off these unwanted system check pop-up windows.

Happens every time I load a source video or a model or run an export. Very annoying.

I don’t use starlight since I didnt meet the system requirements, but there’s no way to turn off that annoying reminder every video that i need to chose any presets.. I get 20 reminders in the past 1 hour. please fix this!
