Sharpen subject broken on V.3.2.1

The sharpen subject selection is all over the place in the new version. It seems to just spread across the top half of the image, totally missing the actual subject

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Open image
  2. Select Sharpen subject from the suggestions
  3. Click on the word “subject” to view the selection

Please take a screen recording of this behavior so I can see exactly what is happening.

Loom is a great free application for this: Loom | Free Screen & Video Recording

Hi John,

I’ve had to uninstall V.3.2.1 to enable me to carry on with my project. So, I’m unable to do a screen recording. I’m now back on V.3.2.0 which is working correctly.

I did reply to your support team with screenshots of the problem.

As you can see, the Sharpen now just spreads blotches across the image.

At first thought it was just the “Subject” option (which I use 99% of the time) but this overall blotchy mess happens for all options in the drop down box.

I also sent the logs to your support team.

Please send me your system profile information so I can check if your computer hardware is up to date.

You can securely submit your files(s) to my Dropbox using the link below.

Please be sure to send me a note here to let me know you sent something.

Hi John, I’ve uploaded my DxDiag on your Dropbox.

Best regards
Boris

After reviewing your system profile information, I noticed that you only have about 4GB of VRAM, while our Minimum Requirement for AMD chips is 6GB of VRAM; this is more than likely the reason you are experiencing this problem with the selection tool. I have included a link to our Topaz Labs Documentation page for your review:

Topaz Photo AI | System Requirements

We do have Topaz Photo AI v3.0.4 and v2.4.2, which may give you a more stable application for this machine. You can use the following links to download these installers for your review:

Topaz Photo AI | v3.0.4 | Windows Installer

  • Released June 13th, 2024

  • Newer interface that all v3 have, but v3.0.4 does not have the new Autopilot updates

  • Can sometimes work on underpowered machines, however will be slower than v2.4.2

Topaz Photo AI | v2.4.2 | Windows Installer

  • Released March 28th, 2024

  • Older interface, will be fastest version your computer can run

Hi John,

Many thanks for investigating and thank you for your reply.

I am well aware that my hardware is not exactly up to date. Nevertheless, version 3.2.0 works perfectly for me (including subject detection). Of course I have to wait a few seconds for the preview, but the subject detection works. It’s just a pity that I can no longer install updates now and have only just paid 99 dollars for the renewel. I would have been better off sticking with version 3.1.3.

I would be interested to know if the other two who have also reported the problem also have inadequate hardware, or if they have a different cause. It would be nice if you could let me know here when they have provided you with their DxDiag data.

Many thanks and best regards
Boris

Same for me, Boris. NVidia GeForce GTX980 with 4GB VRam. Subject selection goes haywire, even with white background.
Can add one more to the list of affected. Back to 3.2.0, works perfect for me too.
I have to renew this month … so … not!

Does it help if you set the AI processor to CPU only?

I haven’t run into problems with 3.2.2 and my UHD630. I don’t have discrete graphics in either my desktop or work laptop, and increased required compute power with newer versions is going to be more of a problem for me than the increased 1yr-upgrade fee. As it is, the selection brush is horribly laggy but if the base automated tools stop working then it’ll be a big problem.

I’ll try that later and see how much it will impact the speed of my workflow.
But at the moment I need to edit a large amount of portrait pictures as I need the subject selection.
Even with a full white background (studio pictures) the selection is more a spread out splash of pixels.
For the moment I went back to 3.2.0 to finish my work in the comming days.

David,
I finished my work and did some try outs.
I’ve reinstalled v3.2.2, put the AI processor to CPU only. Result: same. No subject detection. It randomly select pixels, But strange enough, I still see activity on the GPU, even with “only CPU”.
So, for me … back to v3.2.0 and no renewal of the plan.
