Sharpen function preview now shows a huge increase in noise

I have previously enjoyed the ‘sharpen’ function, which worked very well. After recent upgrades it now appears to sharpen noise, producing unusable previews. Strangely, the output photo seems to be OK but it is tiresome to have to save and examine each time I want to check what the settings produce
