Selection Brush Improvement

I am primarily photographing wildlife. Often I only want to sharpen part of the animal - typically the face, sometimes just part of the face. My PC is WIN 11

Although there seems to be a way to soften a brush the ‘softening’ does not really seem to me to work and even if it does the brush is 'shown on the monitor having hard edges.

Assuming I am correct I would appreciate the ability to soften the edges of the selection brush.
