[RESOLVED] - Batch Processing Memory Allocation | MacOS

I’m a new user, seeing memory management issues on the Mac side, too.

  • Running v 3.1.0
  • Mac Mini M2 Pro
  • 16 GB RAM

Trying to batch process 20 grayscale images, each about 6000 px square and 3 MB (JPG). I can watch memory pressure build through Activity Monitor as the process executes. Sometimes it runs to completion; sometimes the app crashes; sometimes it just runs the Mac out of memory.

I’ve tried quitting all other apps, so there’s no competition for memory.

System Report and Topaz logs attached.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Jim

Please follow the instructions below to perform a clean install to troubleshoot better why you are having this memory allocation problem with Topaz Photo AI:

  1. Be sure you have fully closed any plugins, such as Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, etc.
  2. Clear any previous plist files on your computer for Topaz Photo AI | Topaz Photo AI | plist Files Mac
  3. Disable any antivirus, firewall, VPN, or proxy software that might be active on your computer. These tools sometimes interfere with the installer’s ability to download the model files.
  4. Ensure that the Topaz Photo AI installer has all the proper settings in your system by going to your Mac System Settings > Privacy & Security tab and scrolling down to the security section. You will want to make sure you have ‘App Store and identified developers’ selected | MacOS | Example of Proper System Preferences
  5. Rerun the installer. You can download a new installer from your account’s download page | Topaz Labs | My Account | Download Page

Let me know how that goes for you and I’ll keep an eye out for your reply.

Thanks for your time and attention, John.

I uninstalled Photo AI completely and reinstalled cleanly. I re-ran the same batch job I ran yesterday, and it ran smoothly; memory pressure as represented by Activity Monitor looked well-managed.

After that success, I increased the number of input files in the batch job to 50. That job ran along smoothly for quite a while, but eventually Photo AI ran my Mac out of application memory again.

Screenshot attached, along with tonight’s log files.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Jim

Thanks for sending in that information. It appears that you are experiencing a bug in the application which is related to a previous issue of memory leak. With recent releases we have made this problem better but it is still not completely fixed. I have added your information to the developer’s ticket and will be sure to reach back out to you here directly on this thread once the issue is resolved.

In the meantime a workaround would be to use smaller batches or if you want you can revert back to v2.3.2 which did not have this memory leak problem using the following link:

Topaz Photo AI | v2.3.2 | MacOS Installer

In the meantime, please work in smaller batches or if you want, you can also revert back to v2.3.2, which did not have this memory leak issue: Photo AI v2.3.2

Thanks for your helpful reply, John. I’ll press on a bit and see how frustrating things get. If necessary, I’ll revert to v2.3.2 as you suggested. Glad to know that I have an escape hatch if things get too bad!

All the best,
Jim

We are reaching back to you to let you know that we improved the way that Photo AI manages the memory in recent versions. Since we haven’t received tickets about the memory leak issue for a while, we think it’s resolved.

Please let us know if you still have issues by reaching to help@topazlabs.com and we will look into it.
