[REPROCESSING] - Constant PhotoAI recalculations are driving me CRAZY!

This has been an issue for as long as I’ve owned Topaz products (2-3 years?-well before PhotoAI was released), once the preview is complete and I move the “zoom” window in the upper right pane and all the calculations start over. Why? When the Noise/sharpen/etc calculations are over it should apply to the whole image. That way I can then move the “window” around and see the improvement without waiting for the calls to constantly be reapplied.

At least make this an option in the preferences

Hello Ross,

The AI Models for efficiency will always apply on the area that is showed in the preview and this is the expected and current behavior.

What feature would be most useful for you? The ability to set a default Zoom as “Fit” right off the start? Or the ability to “Pause processing” until you get to the zoom of your choice/enhancements of your choice and then unpause the processing? Both ideas have been submitted by other users and I would like to combine yours to your preferred one.

Keeping an eye on your reply!

Sorry but that makes so sense to me. Why not apply the AI to the entire picture at the beginning; that’s most likely the full target that the AI model has to address anyway. Why only model a subset of the image, and then constantly recalculate every time I move the preview? That seems to me to be very inefficient. Why not “correct” the entire image at once. then, assuming no changes were made to the parameters, it’s done. Save the file and no more calculating to be done. Move the preview window and no more calculating to be done. I just don’t follow the logic of applying the parameters to the preview window only.

Hello @RossDillon ,

This is how the app is currently designed, to maximize seeing results asap and tweaking them. The full image processing then happens in the Export or if you are in “Fit” window the preview will process for the whole image.

Keeping this as an Idea for the development team to have a look at, to add option in Preferences, and/or to be able to set default zoom (separate Idea for having a default zoom setting can be found here.

Thanks for the input!

Hello @RossDillon

Me again!

We have released today in our v3.1.0 a new processing behavior. If you have the Fit view processed, changing in and zooming in will no longer cause reprocessing to happen. We would like you to test it and let us know any feedback you have!

You will be able to download this update from your app directly or by using the following link here:

Here is the full list of changes/fixes done on this release. Please let us know if you have any issues in updating to this version!

Thanks for the heads up. Not sure I want to upgrade however. Every upgrade has actually;y made the user experience worse. I was much happier when Denoise, etc were standalone products, the interface was much better then.

I haven’t used Photo AI hardly at all so I can’t comment on this change…but are you recommending we open documents in “fit” mode and only zoom in after the processing has been completed. Since I traditional do most pixel editing (noise and sharpening) at 100% that’s gonna be a significant metal shift in how I process imagery.

FYI: Why don’t I use Photo AI? Because:

  1. It’s too slow to be usable (I have a loaded-out 2019 iMac [3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9] yet it crawls)
  2. The default sharpening is too “crunchy”, but the amount of “crunchiness” varies between photos so I can no longer just auto accept the edits. I have to tweak each photo individually, which going back to the “too slow” comment makes each and every tweak take f…o…r…e…v…e…r. In fact, the reason I started using Topaz products was because they were smart enough to do everything automatically without requiring any user inputs. Now that’s no longer the case. Trying to find the right level of sharpening on a program that’s this damn slow is simply a non-starter.

Instead I use the old standalone Sharpen AI which also does sufficient noise reduction. With this app I can batch open several files (which still takes forever) but can confidently select all and accept without reviewing them because I know they will be done correctly.

Note: all Topaz apps appear to freeze LRc/PS until the edited photos are returned to their respective app. very annoying given how long that process takes…I can’t use that time to do other work in LRc for example.
