RAW Denoise performs poorly on starry sky's with high ISO

Attempting to denoise a low-light shot of the milkyway. I got a 20 second exposure at f/2.8 of the milkyway with 12800 ISO, and it’s quite noisy as you might imagine. Attempting to denoise the image causes spurious “streaking” artifacts in the sky where the denoise model hallucinates line shapes out of the noise. Traditional wavelet noise reduction techniques in Darktable outperform PhotoAI in this scenario. See attached picture. No amount of fiddling with the sliders could get me a usable image.

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Obtain RAW image of dark night sky at high ISO
  2. Apply RAW denoise

Since RAW photos are used by some websites for authentication purposes (absurd, yes, I know), the RAWs in question could be used to take over my account. Therefore I cannot upload the RAWs in question for security reasons.

I am attaching a processed and cropped image though. The settings don’t really matter, this happens pretty much with any settings on the RAW denoise on this photo, but I’m attaching a screenshot anyway (showing the cropped original as well).

It seems the JPEG compression makes it hard to see the artifacts… and the website auto converts my lossless PNGs to JPEGs…
