Question about using Gigapixel AI

I have an old scanned photo of an old woman which is pretty small (352 x 535 pixels). I thought it might be a good opportunity to try Topaz Gigapixel AI, which I have but never use. I first used Topaz Noise AI on it and it ended up looking pretty good.

When I loaded it into Gigapixel AI, I selected the smallest default enlargement, which was 2x. The skin of the subject ended up looking horrible, noisy and wrinkly. See before and after example. Is this typical for enlarged faces? I adjusted the sliders to try to get a better result, but failed. I can, of course, mask the facial areas to make them look better, but I wonder if there is anything else that can be done. I don’t want to post the entire photo because it isn’t mine.

Is this with face refinement on or off?

With face refinement on or off - it looks the same. The face may not be recognized as such. I think Gigapixel did a good job on everything that’s not skin, so I’m not complaining.

Sometimes Gigapixel seems to find “hidden” surface structures maybe of the old photo itself and then begins to make this more visible. Similar happens on an interlaced movie picture processed with Gigapixels where the interlacing lines become horrible visible suddenly.
