I have been working on a series of techniques to make portrait paintings. I think I have it down pretty well now. The second one I have posted before but totally redid from scratch.

Nice. What you are using to get that canvas cross-hatch effect?
There is one good way to do this. You have to use a canvas or paper texture that is middle gray and copy/paste it over the picture as a final step. You blend it using Soft Light or Overlay and adjust the layer opacity to properly blend it. If the texture is far bigger than the picture you need to adjust the texture size so it is about the same size.
