Plug-in crash on launch PSE Mac M1

Since upgrading to 2.0.2 Photo AI nearly always crashes on startup when being launched as a plugin in PSE 2022 on an M1 Mac Mini running Monterey 12.4.

If Reopen is selected Photo AI opens as a stand alone app with no image loaded ready to edit. Images can be opened in the stand alone app and edited as normal.

Occasionally the plug-in opens normally but it’s pretty hit and miss.

Haven’t had trouble with crashing when opening from Affinity Photo 2 as yet.

Have tried the re installation process mentioned by lingyu but it still crashes on opening.

Topaz Photo AI [v2.0.2] on [Mac]

I recommend decreasing Photoshop memory usage from the Edit > Preferences > Performance menu and decreasing the allowance to Photoshop by half.

Let me know if that changes the crashing behavior.

Hi Lingyu

I’ve tried your suggestion and reduced Photoshop Elements memory usage from 65% to 32%. The only change is that the plug-in has crashed error still pops open but the quit unexpectedly - reopen window no longer appears. I even tried going down to 25% memory but still no joy. PSE was shut down and restarted between memory adjustments.

I’m puzzled as to why the 2.0.2 plug-in initially didn’t work, then after fiddling with plug-in preferences it did work for a couple of days, then failed intermittently and now fails every time.

Plug-in preferences are

where I have TopazDeNoiseAI.plugin, TopazSharpenAI.plugin and TopazDeNoiseAI.plugin

Can you try deleting these four plugin files here, then try it again and let me know what happens?

Please also try setting your Preferences plugin folder to simply /Applications/ instead of directing it to /Applications/Topaz Labs LLC/. Let me know if that changes anything.

Ok I tried that Lingyu and so far, so good. It seems to have worked with regard to the plug-in now booting with all images tested so far. I say “so far” because even previously the plug-in did work on some images then later began crashing when attempting further edits.

However now I get the following message every time PSE is booted independently by double clicking its App icon.

By default double clicking a raw file will open the Elements version of ACR for raw editing then when that edited raw file is opened into PSE’s Expert Mode screen this message will pop up. If a subsequent raw file is edited while PSE is still open the message does not appear.

Not sure what all that means because so far PS Elements seems to work ok? Checking on Adobe’s help website I’m thinking Generator is is a feature I’ve never used.

Best regards
Graham

Just updated to 2.0.4 and as per original post above the “Plug-in has crashed” message has returned.

The four plugin files that you suggested removing last time have reappeared so as suggested last time I have again deleted them and all is now ok. Mind you the “problem with Generator” message still pops up every time Elements is rebooted but does not prevent me from using the app.

It’s getting so that I wonder if I should do the updates when they appear. This never ever happened with Denoise AI and Sharpen AI in the past.

Next time you update could you try deleting only the Apply, Automate, and Gather plugin files? Then run the plugin again and let me know if it fails or not?

I’m curious if a specific plugin file there is causing the issue. If so, I can tell my team to not install the three new plugin files to Photoshop Elements.

Ok, will do. I’ll just have to wait for the next update then if this subject is closed I’ll answer via reply email.

Further to this latest update….

More plug-in crashes

I duplicated the background. Then when trying to open the plug-in from Layer 1 it crashed.

Hi Lingyu

Updated to 2.0.5 three days ago. I was going to take your advice below but first I just tried editing images straight up. So far having edited about 25 images I have not had a plug-in failure even though those plug-in files are still in the Elements 22 Plugins/Panels folder as below.

Don’t know what the difference was this time but so far it’s all good.
