i’m using an m4 max macbook pro (128gb ram) and upscaling 1080p to 4k with topaz video ai using proteus, h.265/main10, and the “copy” audio option, outputting to .mkv. the problem is that the resulting videos freeze during playback at random points, especially in longer content (30+ mins). this happens consistently, and i can always confirm it by skipping around in the video until i find a spot that freezes.
the issue resolves if i manually use ffmpeg to replace the topaz-generated audio with the original audio from the source file, which makes me wonder if it’s an issue with audio synching in the outputted video file? (not sure on that, just a guess.)
anyone else experiencing playback issues like this on apple silicon hardware? seems like a potential topaz bug.
My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I believe I tried the convert option w/ AAC 320kbps and had the same issue when upscaling a 1080p movie.
The devs have been looking into an issue with MKV videos that have caused issues when playing back the videos after exporting.
This is interesting though. I didn’t mention it, but I’ve been going from .mkv to .mkv (1080p .mkv → 4k .mkv). Maybe i should pick a different video container type such as .mp4 or .mov in Video AI?
Another noteworthy detail – the .mkv files I upscale have subtitles included in the .mkv container. My “fix” of manually copying the audio track over with the 4k upscaled video deletes the subtitles. This makes me wonder if the removal of the subtitles with my manual ffmpeg audio copy operation is what is actually fixing the problem.
In the past, I’ve used Proteus to upscale from 1080p .mkv → 4k .mkv for an entire TV series on version 4.?.? without this issue, so I assume this problem was introduced after that.
Hi,
I am using RTX 4090 for upscaling, the same issue is present (upscale from SD to HD, H.265, audio passthrough, ~40 minutes of input). The playback of the video just freezes at some time points. Problem occurs regardless of selected model (protheus, iris, rhea)… The result is unusable.
Just to add, I also have a 4090 + 10900k rig, and I have this same issue on there that I’m having on my M4 Max.
I tend to notice it for longer videos. If I upscale a 10 minute cartoon, for example, I have yet to see the issue. For movies or shows that are 50+ mins, the issue in my OP almost always happens.
