ON1 Plugin Support

I use Topaz Photo AI 4 and Gigapixel 8 as plug-ins with ON1 Photo Raw 2025 to edit and restore old photos, mostly from scans of prints and slides. Until recently I could send the image file to my Topaz apps via Photo Raw, perform my edits, then save them back to the main editor. Now, when I try sending an image to Photo AI 4 or Gigapixel 8 I receive a Topaz message indicating that the file couldn’t be opened because it was an unsupported format. However, when I drag the file or load it via the app it loads and works fine. I suspect this is a bug but, in any case, it is causing a headache. Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

HI.

When you use either Photo AI or Gigapixel as a plugin within any host application the file handling is controlled by said application in your case ON1 Photo RAW

In other words, you click on the image and select Edit in with Topaz Photo AI, ON1 then, creates a JPEG, TIFF or other type of file and sends that file to Topaz Photo AI so, if Topaz Photo fails to read the file the fault must lay with ON1.

Have you updated the ON1 software lately if, not Is there an update available if however, you have the latest update installed then did this issue occur before the update or since

Have you tried the ON1 forum to see if anyone else is having this issue

Hope this helps

Hello @schultzrus - since ON1 is not a supported plugin, it will have inconsistent behavior that we cannot troubleshoot as we cannot test this unsupported plugin. I have moved your query to the Ideas section, and you can make sure to add a vote to it (top of the post). The development team will look at the most popular ideas when considering new features.

We support using Browse or drag and drop from File explorer into Photo AI, then export, then bring that export into the program of your choice. Our supported plugins are here for Photo AI and here for Gigapixel.

Just make sure you are not sending a PSD file as Topaz doesn’t support them.

I apologize for the confusion. I use the Topaz apps as plugins for my On1 Photoraw editor. Up until this last weekend they worked perfectly. Then suddenly, the Topaz plug-ins would not open any of my jpeg images unless I drag them in from Windows Explorer. The problem opening jpegs may have happened earlier but I have not used the software for a few weeks. From what you said, it almost sounds like Topaz disabled the plug-in feature of normal Gigapixel and Photo AI to create special plugin versions. If true please let me know. Using drag and drop is a big inconvenience. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Don

ON1 Photo RAW is not a supported application for Topaz Photo AI or Gigapixel to be used as Plug-ins

The recommended workflow is to use the Standalone versions of Photo AI and Gigapixel for your unsupported ON1 Photo RAW application

It might have worked in the past and it might work in the future who knows but the fact remains it’s not officially supported by Topaz

I have placed a vote in favour of ON1 Photo RAW as it’s becoming more and more popular and should be included as a supported application

Don’t forget Ange moved this to the Ideas Category so, you can vote for your own suggestion

Thanks for the suggestions. I always keep On1 and my Topaz apps updated and is why I suspected it was behind the problem. However, when I restarted the computer this morning the problem appears to have vanished. All my plugins are now working with On1 perfectly. So, unless On1 just fixed the problem, it is likely that it was simply local issue with my computer.

Well. I spoke too soon. It has stopped working again! I will keep playing around with it until I can identify the problem but I suspect it has something to do with the edited vs unedited images edited in On1. In case someone is interested I will update when I know more.
