Apparently Photo AI does not yet support images from the new Nikon Z8. How soon will this be addressed?
Yeah having the same issue when using topaz on its own and when opening from file â plugin extras from lightroom classic. Works fine using Edit In menu from lightroom. Guess thatâs because it converts the image to a different format.
The Z8 is not supported yet by the RAW library we use so we will need to wait on the LibRaw team for this, please see the list below for supported cameras;
After doing further testing, it seems to be the Raw recording type selected in the Raw recording menu in the camera. Loseless compression seems to work fine while the two High efficiency options do not.
Thanks.
My Z8 is set to Raw, lossless compressed. When I open an image in Topaz Photo AI with >File>Plug In Extras the image goes through Processing and I can see the improved image but when I Save I get this message: âImage failed to process. Processed photo may be from an unsupported camera or malformatted file:
/Volumes/TJ1 Samsung/Pictures/LR Imports/NZ8_0138-2.dng
canReadFile: dng_error_unsupported_raw
When I open the Support button I get a list of cameras supported and those not supported which includes the Z9 but the Z8 is not listed.
However, I also have a Z9 and those images are processed perfectly and saved by Photo AI.
When I use the >Photo>Edit In route with a Z8 image it processes but saves as a .tif file.
Hopefully the Z8 will be part of an upgrade soon.
Surprised it hasnât yet happened since Photo AI seems to update very regularly.

Weâre working on supporting the Z8 in a future release coming soon, likely next quarter.
Thereâs a significant amount of testing that goes into adding a new camera model but itâs a high priority for us.
Thanks.

Topaz Photo AI [v1.x.x] on [Windows/Mac]
When you bring in a Nikon Raw High Effeciiency file all that shows on the screen is coloured lines.
This is for Nikon Z8
It is unacceptable that Topaz does not support all of Nikonâs compressed files. While I understand there are work arounds, however, it collides with my workflow.
Please focus on this problem.
Many thanks

Ed
As this is a user to user forum you probably wonât get and answer but, support for Nikonâs High Efficiency compression (Z9 camera support) is currently in beta testing.
If you want an answer from Topaz raise a support request at the main website.
I would use NEF raw with no compression in the interim.
The latest update for Topaz Photo AI, v1.4.0 has support for the Z8 and Z9 HE* file types.
Please update your Topaz Photo AI and then you will be able to use the files.
You can update by opening Topaz Photo AI and clicking the Update Available button on the top right or downloading a new installer from the downloads page:
https://topazlabs.com/downloads/
I cannot process NEF files from my Nikon Z8 using the Files> Plugin Extras> pathway, I get an unsupported file message when it comes to save the image. I can use the âEdit inâ which processes to TIF but comes with the advice that I get better results s if I go the Files route. Am I missing something or is an upgrade coming?
I believe that the HE/HE* Nikon pseudo-RAW formats are not supported but the NEF will be supported by LibRAW as soon as possible. If you raise a support request at the main website for Topaz Labs they will be able to help.
Hi @moliverzw,
The Z8 is not supported yet by the RAW library we use, please see the list below for supported cameras;
Thanks for the list of cameras, Preston. Having just bought the Z8 I will not be selling it to buy a camera from the list
Not only is it not supporting the Z8 but with the Sigma Lens that has been supported for almost a year and a half of my usage has dropped off the list. You got lots of work to do Topaz!
