View from German bunker overlooking the cliffs at Pont du Hoc Normandie, France. On June 6, the US Army Rangers assaulted the cliffs from the beach below to take out German coastal defense guns, which had never been installed.

I thought the artillery had been in place, but had been moved by the Germans and replaced with decoys? Didn’t the Rangers eventually find four of the six cannons and destroy or disable them?

Our tour guide told us that none were installed in the bunkers. We did see a static display of one of the coastal defense guns in a nearby town. See this Washington Post article:
