Tried AI only a very noisy b&w, that has many, many, many cracks. Could not tell any difference between the original and the processed photo. Will share photo if you want.

Sounds like you are talking about a scan which is not really supported because the models have not been trained on scans only digitally created images from cameras.
That’s essentially what a scanner does; digitally create an image. PAI will work quite well on scanned photos, slides, negatives. I have found it to struggle with old scanned b&w but without knowing how bad the op’s photo is it’s hard to say why or what is going on. Topaz labs is supposedly getting my scanned photos to use in their machine learning (at least I checked the box to allow)?
It seems that you’ve overread the second part of the statement:
So, yes, a scanner also creates digital images - but this is quite different regarding artifacts / shortcomings compared to images directly taken by a lens/sensor combination.
So, for scans to work well Topaz would have to create an extra model specifically for this.
Of course you’re not the only one that wants this, so maybe if there’s enough demand we will see a solution for that scenario as well.
Here’s hoping that Topaz will improve upon scan scenarios, but it does a good job for now IMO. I’ll keep submitting my work in hopes it helps them.
If your original image is in bad shape, and if you have PS you can try the neural filter photo restoration first and attempt to repair it or manually perform some repairs on it and then send it to PAI. This might help. Just depends on how bad the original is. I’ve had various levels of success with vintage scanned photos, however, some are just partially redeemable. They’re just too far deteriorated. FWIW, I use an Epson V500 scanner. Overall photo restoration can often be experimentation, trial and error and researching what other professionals are doing.
Ive heard Topaz AI has not been developed on Black and White images. Ive had problems with B&W images when processing with Topaz, such as it adding colour artefacts, others have reported this as well. Before AI did not have any issues.
