I feel like I got scammed. does this software actually work?

So far I have not been able to get this software to actually finish a video. $300 down the drain. 24 hours of processing and it just ends with “error”. No other indications. This particular example, I’m trying to 2x upscale a high quality 4k video from a Panasonic GH5. It took me an hour to figure out that I can’t leave the default h265 setting because it’s not compatible with 8K. How is that even an option if it’s not compatible? And again, no indication in the software other than “resolution error”. This feels like amateur hour. I know my frustration is high right now, but the more I read on this forum, the more it feels like I got scammed by a completely bunk software that doesn’t actually work. If I have to contact support EVERY time I try to use it, then what’s the point?

This is a little bit of a scolding for you: They offer unlimited trial mode without paying a thing.
Either way, Topaz is super good about refunds and responding to emails and such.

Rant

(Personally I think 4K is only useful for creating movies—not for final presentation, but that’s just me. [That puts 8k somewhere in the realm of just wasting space, power and time for nothing but a bigger number.])

That sounds odd. hevc_nvenc (NVidia GPU accelerated h265 encoder) can handle 8k 10-bit and 8-bit, however, h264_nvenc can only handle 4k 8-bit. See table below.

GPU accelerated encoding/decoding and compatibility with certain resolutions depends on graphics card as well. Though NVidia 20-series and newer should suffice.

Software based encoding, such as libx264 and libx265 can potentially handle higher resolutions and bit depths depending on profile and level but is computationally extremely intensive on the CPU.

It’s not a TVAi issues. It’s hardware and encoder limitations.

I do agree that codec settings should change dynamically depending on output resolution. A tooltip pops up if you try to encode 8k with h264 saying it’s not compatible. Don’t know if it pops up if your GPU isn’t compatible though.

What CPU and GPU are you running the software on?
