How much RAM is needed for a Mac Studio with an M2 Maxchip?

How much RAM is optimal for a new Mac Studio with the M2 Max chipset? I am a professional photographer and my RAW images come out of the camera at about 120 MP each. I also stitch large panoramas that can be be 500 - 600 MP. I am currently running a 2019 iMac with 64 GB of RAM. I originally had 32 GB and recently upgraded to 64 GB to see if that would speed up TPAI – it didn’t.

Upgrading from 32 GB to 64GB in the Studio is a $400 increase and I hate to waste the money if it is not going to really make a substantial difference. (10-20% improvement is not substantial. 50% or better is worth it.)

Anyone have any experience with the Mac Studio M2 Max that can give me some advice?

Thanks.

I use the M2 for work and it’s quite fast for most workflows. The heavier the load of your workflow, the more of a difference the upgrade will be. If you’re processing thousands of RAW photos or using several editing programs at once then it may be worth considering the upgrade. What do other users think?

Hello Jon,
I’m at similar page the you’ve been quarter ago. Right now using Mac Pro 5.1 and 2019 iMac. Similar work: >120MPix as beginning and even more than 600MPix after stitching. Also thinking about M2 Max Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM. What did you choose and are you happy about it? What’s the difference comparing to iMac?

Regards
Martin
