HEIC photos will not open in Photo AI 3.2.1 from Apple Photos

This behavior started again suddenly.

There was an update to 3.2.1 so I updated and tried again.

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Edit a photo in Apple Photos
  2. Select “Edit in Photo AI” from the plug-ins menu
  3. Photo AI opens
  4. Photo AI generates a message that it cannot open this file.
  5. Click OK and Photo AI shuts down

PNG and JPG images open OK, just not HEIC.

Can you edit them if you use TPAI in standalone mode? I certainly can (sorry, I don’t use Apple Photos so can’t test that for you). Given the concerns about the new EULA, I am still on v 3.2.0!

OK, I set up Apple Photos to see what happens for me.Is this the correct way to send to TPAI?

If so, I notice that the HEIC is converted to a TIFF, but then the image won’t save back to Apple Photos. Maybe I am not doing this right!

We do support HEIC; however, it is important to note that we do not support ProRAW files.

There have been a few users who have reported that Apple’s recent iOS update has changed the way they encode HEIC files, which has created some problems.

To help the developers investigate why this might be occurring and to find a solution to this issue would you mind sharing a HEIC file that you are having trouble using with Photo AI?

You can securely submit your image(s) to my Dropbox using the link below.

Please be sure to send me a note to let me know if you send something.

I’ve added this ticket to a support ticket we opened with our development team. I will contact you once this issue has been resolved and update you on this email thread.

In the meantime, the current workaround would be to convert those HEIC files to either JPEG or TIFF .

Let me know if you have any other questions in the meantime and I will be sure to keep you updated :slightly_smiling_face:

The dropbox link doesn’t seem to work for me, I just get a blank browser screen. I tried to send two photos but the email was bounced back. This one image is 2.4MB, so I hope this gets to you…

Also, note that for images shot with my iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, they seem to work OK with Luminar Neo, either as an Apple Photo extension or “standalone”. This is just happening with photos from my iPhone 15 Pro.

Thanks,
JE

Dropbox servers were having issues yesterday; this has now been resolved. Would you mind trying the Dropbox link above again?

Please be sure to send a note when you send something in.

I will note that the iPhone 15 ProRAW files are not currently supported by Photo AI. However, our development team is currently investigating an issue with the most recent iOS update. Were these images taken with an iPhone using the latest iOS18 update?

Thanks, I uploaded two photos that won’t open to your DropBox. Neither are Raw files. Yes, I took the photos with iOS 18 on my iPhone 15 Pro. It was version 18.0. I haven’t upgraded to 18.1 yet.

The two images I uploaded into your dropbox:

IMG_0614 as exported.heic: this is the image exported from Apple Photos.
IMG_0614.heic: this is the original image without edits from Apple Photos Neo.

Both generate “Invalid Input: Unspecified: Metadat not correctly assigned to image"

Cheers,
JE

Thanks for sending in those files. I’ve added this information to an ongoing support ticket we have open with the development team, who are investigating this problem with the recent iOS update and HEIC files.

We will be sure to reach out to you on this forum thread once we have released a new version that address this problem.

In the meantime, if you have any other questions please feel free to send us an email at help@topazlabs.com
