Have to "start a free trial" every time, won't work offline

I’m trying to do a trial of Video AI 7.0.2 on macOS 15.5, Mac M1. Every time I start it, even though it says “trial” in yellow at the top right, it shows the window with “start a free trial” and the guy getting hit in the head with sand. I have to put in my username and password again. If I don’t have WiFi, I can’t use it. Is this normal?

I also have a trial of Photo AI, and it doesn’t do that. The first time I started the trial it opened my browser to log in, and then doesn’t ask me anymore. Video AI never opened my browser. Does it work differently?

I tried to do “get logs for support”, and it brings the Finder to the front, but doesn’t take me anywhere that there are logs to see.

Let’s start with uninstalling that version of Video AI on your system and clearing the Plist files as it sounds like something might have broken when installing.

  1. Uninstall Topaz Video AI by dragging and dropping the app into the trash bin
  2. Delete the plist files & empty the trash bin
How To Delete Your Plist Files
  3. Reboot your Mac
  4. Reinstall

Trying logging in with the account for the trial again and see if it moves past the pop-up screen with the guy getting hit with sand.

I reinstalled as you suggest (tried that already yesterday) but it doesn’t make any difference. I also gave it “full disk access” and “automation” permission to control Finder, in the security system settings.

It’s not that it doesn’t move past the pop-up screen with “Get started with Video AI”. It’s just that I have to go through it every time I start it, which is different from your other apps’ trials. I don’t know if that’s expected behavior, or not. Does Video AI work differently than Photo AI or Gigapixel for setting up the trial? Is it expected that you need an Internet connection and have to sign in every time you start it? With the other two, during the process it went through my browser to activate the trial, and then it doesn’t ask anymore when starting up. With Video AI, it doesn’t open my browser, and it doesn’t create a lasting trial activation. I have to “set up free trial” every time.

When it starts, it shows “trial” in yellow at the top right. The pop-up comes up, and I click the blue “Start a free trial” button (or “activate with e-mail”, it’s the same either way), then “Continue with e-mail”. I put in my e-mail and press “Continue”, and it says “Welcome back”, and I put in my password. Then in the top right it says “checking license”, and then goes back to “trial”, and finally the pop-up goes away and I can start using it. But I have to sign in this way every time, which is annoying, and if I’m away from the WiFi, I can’t sign in, and can’t use it.

I can keep going with the trial this way, it’s not a big problem, I just thought I’d ask whether you know what’s going on. Probably I’ll have bigger questions once I actually start using it :slightly_smiling_face:

Sending a message to the team to check on this and get clarity on the expected workflow of this. Video AI is a different login workflow than Photo AI or Gigapixel.

Any news on this? I’m getting tired of typing my e-mail and password every time I restart the app. Probably the guy is getting tired of being hit in the head with sand, over and over too… If it’s really meant that you have to log in every time, couldn’t it at least save my e-mail and password, so I don’t have to type it always? But really, that’s not a great solution either. I know you have to be online to download models, but it’s not great if you can’t even start the app when you’re offline. Is this going to be the case if I end up buying a license?

Running some tests on my end and I am getting the same action of having to log back in or choose to activate with Google on each launch.

Adding a note for the team to try and get this adjusted so that it lines up with the same behavior as seen in the other apps.

When the app is licensed you should stay logged in as it will retain the authentication token on your system.
