Gigapixel 7.4.4 goes into an infinite loop on some files

With many files but not all Gigapixel (up to date) on Mac goes into a non-stop loop on Face Recovery or Initializing. Normally such images (typically 800x800) take less than a minute to be ready for export; I waited an hour on one problem image. It doesn’t seem to matter which model is used. If I click on Export Image while in the loop, it just re-enters the loop. I have a problem image that I can upload if I can find out how.

Found the problem: after the most recent update it defaulted Version to Gen. 2 Beta. Put it back to Gen. 1 and no more loops.

Hi folks. I installed the latest update today (Oct 4 2024) and noticed that when upscaling a large photo the rendering didn’t finish. Sometimes if I moved render box a little bit the image then completed rendering. I restored my PC from a complete backup (there were other things I wanted to restore) and the previous version does not experience the same issue. So there seems to be a bug in the leatest update or something has changed that stops it working on my PC properly.

Hi @keithwm ,

Thanks for the report!

Would you mind reaching us at help@topazlabs.com so we can take a closer look?

The issue you are seeing might have something to do with the way the software was installed. If some conflicting model files/directories from an older version are at play, you will likely want to try a clean install of the latest version of Gigapixel to see if the problem is alleviated.

  1. Delete Gigapixel by pasting in the paths below and right-clicking on the folder and selecting “delete.”
  • C:\Program Files\Topaz Labs LLC\Gigapixel
  • C:\ProgramData\Topaz Labs LLC\Gigapixel
  1. Delete the Gigapixel registry entries.

How to delete your Registry on Windows

  1. Restart your machine and download a fresh installer for Gigapixel from the “My Products" page.

  2. Once downloaded, open Gigapixel as a standalone and ensure it functions correctly.

Let me know if this helps, or please do reach out to us so we can discuss more details and find where the issue is occurring.

Best,

Also, hello @john.sankey !

My initial thought is that you might benefit from a clean install as well (the steps are different for Mac).

However, it also sounds like your Mac might lack the necessary resources for Gen 2 Face Recovery. Either that, or the image you are working with does not play nice with Gen 2 Face Recovery.

Either way, there are several solutions or explanations we could explore if you want to reach us at help@topazlabs.com as well.

In the meantime, feel free to give the following a whirl to see if that clears things up:

  1. Delete the installed Gigapixel application by moving it to the trash or using the uninstaller if it has one.
  2. Remove your plist files.
Note: After deleting your plist files, clear your trash and restart your Mac.
  3. Download a fresh Gigapixel installer from your “My Products” Page.
Note: If you use Photoshop or Lightroom Classic, close these applications before installing a fresh version.
  4. Once installed, open the application as a standalone to make sure it works properly.

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for this reply. Before I try the possible solution do you have a link to previous versions of Gigapixel AI? To go back to the previous version I had to do a full restore of my computer but I’d like to avoid that if ‘the fix’ doesn’t work. Also, are you aware other people on the noticeboard had similar problems since the update where the rendering of the preview never finished? I was using the standard V2 setting to upscale an image.

Hi Keith,

You can absolutely try reverting to a previous version of Gigapixel AI to see if it resolves the issue you’re facing. We’re aware that some users have encountered similar problems with the preview rendering not finishing in the latest update. You can find a list of previous versions and their installers here: Topaz Labs Community.

Let me know if you run into any issues!

Best,

Thank you for the reply. Because other people have the same issue, is it worth me uninstalling the current version 7.4.3 or should I wait for a new update?

Regards

Keith Marriott

@keithwm

Personally, I think you should give 7.4.4 a whirl and see if the problem persists.

If so, then reach out to us at help@topazlabs.com with more info.

The reason I say this is that when re-reading our thread, it’s a bit unclear to me the specific issue you are reporting. I recommend having a look through the following as well, in case it’s helpful:

Troubleshooting Gigapixel AI Stalling During Export

If Gigapixel AI stalls during export, it’s usually because your computer has run out of resources (RAM or VRAM). Follow these steps to troubleshoot:

1. Check System Requirements

Make sure your system meets or exceeds the minimum requirements, especially for resource-heavy tasks. Refer to the system requirements for more details.

2. Selecting the AI Processor

To optimize performance, you can select which AI processor Gigapixel AI uses for processing. This can help if your computer has multiple GPUs or if you want to ensure the best hardware is being utilized.

  • Open the Preferences Panel:
    • Mac: Click on the Gigapixel AI menu, then choose Preferences.
    • Windows: Go to Edit in the main menu and select Settings.
  • Change the AI Processor:
    • In the Preferences window, under the General tab, you’ll find a setting called AI Processor. You can choose between your CPUor GPU for processing. If your computer has a powerful GPU, selecting it will significantly speed up image upscaling.
    • Gigapixel AI generally selects the best available processor by default, but if you have multiple GPUs or an integrated GPU, manually choosing the better-performing option can help optimize processing time.

3. Handling Large Files and Resource Usage

Gigapixel AI is primarily designed to enhance smaller, low-quality images, making them suitable for printing, web use, etc… However, applying models to larger files—such as RAW images from high-res cameras or large TIFFs—can be extremely resource-intensive, even for powerful systems. Here are some scenarios to consider:

  • Enhancing Large Files: Running models on large, high-resolution files (RAW or TIFF) requires significant resources. Gigapixel is optimized for smaller images, so enhancing very large files increases the risk of overwhelming system resources. If you’re frequently working with large images or RAW captures, consider using Topaz Photo AI, which is better suited for such workflows.

  • Large Upscales: Upscaling high-res images by large factors, like 6X, significantly increases system strain. Larger upscales require more resources, so starting with a big file and attempting a large upscale will be far more demanding than a smaller upscale, like 2X or 4X. Reducing the upscale factor or using a simpler model can help manage resource usage.

  • Large Exports: Exporting large images is resource-intensive, especially with minimal compression or high bit depths. For example, exporting a 6X upscaled image as a TIFF with high bit depth and minimal compression will require significantly more resources than exporting as a JPEG with default compression. To reduce strain, consider adjusting compression settings or bit depth—JPEG, TIFF, and PNG formats all allow for these adjustments. Opting for lower bit depths, higher compression, or more efficient formats like JPEG can help manage resource usage and prevent stalling.

3. Using Resource-Intensive Models

  • AI Model Selection: Different AI models are optimized for different types of images. For example, certain models like High Fidelity or Low Resolution might struggle with specific image characteristics where the Standard model works better. Choosing the right model based on your image type can help reduce stalling and improve results. For more information on model selection, refer to the AI Models Guide.
  • Recovery Model: The Recovery model is in beta and highly resource-intensive. You need at least 6GB of VRAM, and 8GB is highly recommended, even for images under 1000x1000 pixels. Using larger images will almost certainly cause stalling or very slow exports depending on your machine’s capabilities. For more details, refer to the Recovery FAQs.

4. Avoid Running Other Software or Processes in the Background

  • When exporting large files or running batch exports of any size, avoid running other software or processes in the background. This includes browsers, video editing software, or any other applications that consume significant RAM, VRAM, or CPU resources.
  • Background tasks, especially resource-intensive ones, can deplete system resources further and lead to stalling during the export process. Closing unnecessary programs ensures that Gigapixel AI has access to the full amount of memory and processing power it needs to complete the task efficiently.

5. Potential Bugs or Memory Leaks

If none of the above solutions resolve the issue, you may have encountered a bug or memory leak. In this case, you can:

  • Send Your Logs and System Profile: Contact us at help@topazlabs.com with your Gigapixel logs and system profile so we can investigate. Here’s how to gather that information:

    • To Get Your Logs:
      • Open Gigapixel.
      • Go to the Help menu and select “Open Log Folder.”
      • In the Logs folder, select all files, right-click, and choose “Compress” to create a .zip file.
      • Attach the .zip file to your email.
    • To Get Your System Profile:
    • Attach your system profile along with the logs in the same email.
  • Try Downgrading Gigapixel: You can also try downgrading to an older version of Gigapixel to see if the issue persists. Installers for previous versions are available in the Gigapixel AI Community.
