The statues are muses in the gardens of Hardwick Hall. The notable owner was one Elizabeth Hardwick who was a contemporary of and part of the royal court of Elizabeth I. She rose to be second wealthiest woman in the land by her own efforts and was one “hard dame” - had 4 husbands!
Like all English country houses it had elegant grounds - gotta be better than Lord XXXX down the road! – and there are several statues in the new hall. The old hall burnt down just after they tired of living there.
