Feedback on Remove in Version 2.1.1

When I click on Remove the screen displays that it is “compiling models” and never goes out of that state. This was true for me in Versions 2.1.0 and 2.1.1. Today using Version 2.1.1 Iet this process run for 30minutes. During that entire time the display read “compiling models”. Looking at the Activity Monitor I saw that CPU time stayed in the 10 to 11% range and GPU was in the 6 to 7% range. Photo AI was the only application running. The message states that this process can take a few minutes.

My questions are: Should this process take in excess of 30 and I am just not being patient enough? Is there a known problem with this beta running on my type hardware or operating system (both described below)? I would appreciate even a very short answer as I know you all are busy working on a complex system.

I am using a Mac mini M1 (2020) running Monterey 12.7.1 have 16GB of RAM and 710.99 GB of disk space.

Thanks for your time.

Peace
Marvin

Why still on Monterey / MacOS 12? We’re at 14 now.

And even if I can understand why people are reluctant to install Sonoma / MacOS 14 which does still have it’s share of issues Mac OS Ventura works stable, so why not trying this.

And to your question: No, it definitely should NOT take anywhere near 30 Mins

Thank you. The reason I have not updated is because of a serious illness in the family I had have had to deal with and the compatibility of Sonoma with my current software which in the case of one piece of software just did say it is supported. I’ll update when I have sufficient time to do it. . At this time I am just looking to see if the problem is related to my computer or the operating system. Appreciate your answer that it should not take anywhere near 30 minutes. Please understand I am not filing a complaint about the software nor claiming it is a bug, I am just trying to find out the cause of the situation. I understand Remove is beta code and it may not be ready for or have been tested for all hardware and operating systems.

Thanks again and if you would say a prayer for my 97 year old mother. She has made good progress in her recovery and a bit of prayer helps.

Peace
Marvin

It’s related to your computer’s configuration because I’m using the exact same computer/memory except I’m on latest Sonomo and it takes 42 seconds on my system

Thank you very much Fred appreciate your response. I try it again when in a couple of days after I upgrade the OS to Sonoma.

So, you already touched on this, but as somebody who did tech support for a decade or two (for Apple, too), I will say that you’re going to hit the “it’s in Beta,” wall in regards to proper support around the Remove issue. The TL;DR is that you should collect logs to really get this moving.

Unless the devs have time to jump on here and request a verbose log of what was going on during that slowdown and review it, we (the hardcore Topaz fans) would need more info on your system. Weird that Activity Monitor clocked your GPU usage so low, while CPU was higher, but it makes sense if the feature hasn’t been optimized retroactively for previous OS releases. I might be wrong on this, but beta features are typically written for latest/greatest OS architecture. That’s a bit of a long shot as I truly do not think the issue is with your system, but rather a new feature that was tested internally on 4090s or beefier.

Options:

  • Create a new Mac user and try there - could be bloatware/updates/iTunes/who knows
  • Log your session and review what your Mac was up to during that time - I’m not on the Beta, but maybe it has a debug feature built in?
  • Test a non-beta feature and note the fps/total time to process, then test on the latest stable build. If there’s a difference, that’s a sign of classic beta growing pains. If not, then you’ve confirmed that it’s this particular feature.

I’m on Win10 / Nvidia 3090, so I apologize as my Mac tech IQ is out of date. Did you see any corresponding spikes in mem usage, cpu, read/write or anything like that? Not sure if Sonoma would help, and it would only demand more resources for day-to-day Mac stuff.

Keeping your mother in my thoughts! 97! I can only imagine the amazing things she’s seen over the decades (leading up to this AI explosion) Take care.

Thank you very much for the information. I’ll be upgrading the OS to the latest version in the next couple of days and see what happens. Like you say it may very well be it was built or tested on the latest OS. If there is a problem after that then it is probably something else on my end since Fred_Kingston replied that he is using the exact same computer/memory as me but has the latest OS version installed. If I see I still have a problem then I’ll certainly start gathering information as you advise. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. Thanks for keeping Mom in your thoughts. That’s very kind. She is in a facility and she took a very bad turn in late September and I thought we had lost her but she is slowly recovering.

Have good weekend. Take care.

@Fred_Kingston and @Futurewizard I upgraded OS to Sonoma 14.1.1 (the latest OS) and the Remove function works just fine. I truly appreciate you both for taking the time to respond. Thank you very much.
