Education | Workaround when the graphic card is under requirements

Photo AI 3.2.1 kept crashing trying to process a Canon raw (.cr3) file. I had no network connectivity at the time and noticed network errors in the Photo AI logs so thought it may need access to the Internet.

When I got to a point where I had Internet connectivity, I noted there was an update to 3.3 so did the update but that version also crashes on the same file.

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Open .cr3 file
  2. Autopilot loads and starts processing the file
  3. Last message before crashing was “Detecting Subject”

I’ve tried converting the file to .dng and.tiff but it sill crashes.

I’ve reviewed the information, and it shows that your machine, unfortunately, does not meet our Minimum System Requirements. I have included a link to our Topaz Labs Documentation page for your review:

Topaz Photo AI | System Requirements

Your machine’s Intel GPU only has about 1GB of VRAM, while our requirement is 6GB.

We do have Topaz Photo AI v3.0.4 and v2.4.2, which may give you a more stable application for this machine. You can use the following links to download these installers for your review:

Thanks for getting back to me. When I checked the performance tab in Windows task manager it indicated the GPU memory is 8GB so I thought I met the reqs.

Just a suggestion but wouldn’t it be more customer-friendly to have the installation code double check requirements instead of letting the program just crash?

Dave

We appreciate the suggestion and I will be sure to bring this up to the team for consideration in future releases. If you need any further assistance you can always send us an email at help@topazlabs.com

Thanks John.

Note that I tried setting the AI Processor in Preferences to CPU instead of Auto and v3.3.0 was able to process the raw file. It’s probably a lot slower than using a GPU but means I don’t have to run out and buy a new laptop.

Dave.
