Education | Topaz Photo Does Not Recognize Cropping From Lightroom Classic

Editing colour photo prints with white borders from 35mm film ; My first step is to transform in LRC. I use “Guided” to ensure edges are all parallell. Then I Crop image to eliminate background beyond the white edges.

I use “Plug-in Extras” Topaz Photo Ai (Studio) ver 1.0.2. and edit a COPY with LRC Edits.

It sees the “transform” edits fine. But not the crop

Hi.

With the Plug-in Extras Method it is recommended sending your image to Topaz Photo first and applying your RAW Denoising, Sharpening and Upscaling before returning your DNG to Lightroom for further editing Topaz Photo or AI have never recognised Lightroom edits

Here’s the information from Topaz

We recommend using unedited RAW files with this plugin because Topaz Photo does not read any of the edits made on the RAW file in LrC. Once the DNG file is back to LrC after the Topaz Photo edits, that is when you want to do your light and color edits.

Although it’s doesn’t mention it Cropping is included

If, you want to continue Editing your Image your way and Editing and Cropping the Image in Lightroom first before sending them to Topaz Photo you need to use the Edit in Method

Edit, your Image in Lightroom then, when you’re done right click on the image and a list will appear scroll down to Edit in then, select Topaz Photo (Studio) and pick Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments.

Hope this helps

I don’t work for Topaz and I’m glad you like the Topaz software also, you I the Topaz Applications as a whole are truly awesome.

You mentioned the new Dust & Scratches Removal which I agree is brilliant however, with a lot of these type of Filters it’s difficult for them sometimes to distinguish the difference between Dust and image elements.

So, if I may offer a tip if you see this phenomenon first thing is don’t panic and don’t bin the filter because, what I would do is continue processing the image using the filter regardless of the damage it may cause to your image and when you’re finished applying your Enhancements save the image as usual but, close the image.

Next go back into Topaz Photo and save a second image without the Dust & Scratches Removal Filter applied so, you have two versions one with D&S and one without D&S.

This can be achieved both in the Standalone version and by using the Edit in filter version of Topaz Photo

Next thing to do is open both versions within Photoshop and by now you probably know where I’m going with this but, wait there’s one more part to add.

So, you have both images open in Photoshop the one without the D&S applied as your Background Layer and the one with D&S applied on top next Click on the top Layer and Press Command/Control plus the J key to Duplicate the top Layer then hold down the Option/Alt key and Click on the Add Layer Mask Icon to add an inverted Mask do this for both Layers.

This next part is the bit a lot of people miss.

The Layer you Duplicated change the Blend Mode to Darken and the Layer below change the Blend Mode to Lighten and simply paint away lighter spots from the Darkened Blend Mode Layer and the darker spots from the Lightened Blend Mode Layer.

By doing it this way you maintain as much of the original image texture while removing lighter and darker dust elements.

A bit of a palaver I admit but at the end of the day we’re trying to restore our images not destroy them.

Hope this helps
