Education | Remove Tool Will Have Issues If Computer Is Under Minimum System Requirements

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Start Photo AI vers 3.2.1.
  2. Select remove enhancement
  3. Select the tophat
  4. Press “remove selection”
  5. System crashes, usually after several seconds, sometimes only after pressing the “export” button.
  6. Had the same problem, reverted back to vers 3.2.0 and did NOT have the problem
7 FWIW noticed in 3.3.2 that while processing after the “export” button, the image would quickly reach about 85% done, pause the just goes to black screen and crashes the system.

Tpaz Photo AI on Windows10 Pro

Trying to remove hat from photo, system crashes, no errors, no warning.

Steps to reproduce issue:

1.Load Photo (Windows 10 Pro
2. Select hat, using object removal brush (see screen shot)
3. Removed hat, or rather, created a new hat out of this air…?
4. Press undo selection, and then select ALL components of hat. Press remove.
5. Process runs along, crashes about when “removing objects…” button in lower left corner reaches the first ellipse dot…

Topaz Photo AI 3.3.0 (also on previous two update version – did not occur before then), running Window 10 Pro

DxDiag.txt (99.9 KB)

Filter Plugin Log.txt (5.8 KB)

P.S. Seems to act like some sort of file buffer over-run, Possibly because previous selection NEVER seem to clear. When doing a remove object, often have to completely exit after first pass, rename file, and remove second object(s), or the system remembers the last applied removal, and WON’T FORGET so that you can try a second time on the same photo load.

Also, doesn’t seem to get to a point where the file logs can even be written by Photo AI

I hope you don’t mind but I took the liberty of downloading your picture and replicated yours steps to see if I got the same crashes but I didn’t. The only difference I made in the original picture was to mask all the hat.

Windows 11, Home using Photo AI 3.3.0 Standalone.

I did three passes with the remove tool with different masking for each picture to remove the different hats that were created on each pass (Which I didn’t think was possible. So I’ve learnt something new) I’ve screen grabbed the results.

Regards.

Thanks for the reply. FWIW, I’m using Win10 Pro, not Win 11, if that might be a factor.

All I can tell is that I have to drop back to Photo AI 3.2.0 to keep the system from crashing. This same kind of event was occurring shortly after the remove function was added, months ago, but has been non-exist-ant between then and the introduction of 3.2.1 version. My software hasn’t changed. but something about yours has in the recent updates. All I can tell you is that the system crashes most of the time, during the object removal phase. I am not the only one with this problem, and I hope you can find a solution with my, and others, problem with this.

Something changed after version 3.2.0, and whoever wrote the code should be able to isolate the problem during that window. As I former system programmer, all I can say is that it acts exactly like an unexpected exception, file or buffer over-run, which does not even give the system time to send an error message it just hangs for a few seconds and then crashes, not even generating a crash log…

Hope to hear more soon. Been using your software for close to two years and it has been good, until now. 3.2.0 will get me by for now, but I can’t use any of the new features until this is fixed, so please, don’t give up without a fight, even though the answer is not right in front of you…

I’m sorry. I seem to have inadvertently given the impression that I am a member of the Topaz team. I am not. I’m just another forum member who was trying to help. I hope this doesn’t cause problems with you getting this resolved.

For what it’s worth I have never had the software crashing when using the Remove tool. It may be down to the different Operating Systems.

My apologies for any confusion caused.

Okay, thanks.

I experienced the same issue here with photo ai version 3.3.3 and windows 10 pro. I tried AI processor with Auto, CPU and GPU. No luck. Actually the object has been removed, then in a few seconds, the app crashes.

Yes, I have the same problem with ALL version after 3.2.0. I tried even re-installing everything on a disk with a couple of spare terabytes of space, with no joy.
I thought maybe the process was running out of disk space. IT WILL BE INTERESTING IF TOPAZ QUIETLY CLOSES THIS TREAD IN 4 DAYS WITH NO CURE OR RESPONSE…

Hello @edward.ellickson - This is a community forum, for which other users can give their input, for which @myhuskymax and @robert.bingham kindly have done and showed their results

Looking at crash reports for your machine on our side, Remove Tool will not work correctly on your machine as you have a AMD graphic card with only 0.5GB of VRAM, when the minimum needed to meet the minimum requirements for Photo AI is to have a lot more, 6GB of VRAM (8GB recommended). The selection of the hat is also very big, and the tool mentions not to select areas that are more then 25% of the picture. The intended use of this tool is to remove let’s say, people on the beach behind your subject, a trash can that ruins a picture, etc, not changing a hat on a person.

Until you can get a computer that meets the minimum requirements, the most memory intensive will cause issues on this machine. You can test, in the meantime, to force Photo AI to use your RAM: Edit > Preferences > General > AI Processor to CPU.
