Education | Lens Distortion Corrections

Crop and rotate are always available, but I often find myself forced back to Lightroom for distortion corrections. What I’m referring to are the basic barrel, pincushion, and keystone adjustments that are common when photographing inanimate technical subjects with short‑focal‑length lenses or compact‑camera zooms. I’m not suggesting full lens‑profile support like DxO, or comprehensive transform tools like Photoshop — just the simple corrections I mentioned above.

Hi.

Topaz Photo and the Previous Version Topaz Photo AI have always had Lens Correction for Lens Distortion Corrections plus Barrel, Pincushion, you’ll find it within the Preferences Menu.

Simply goto Preferences or Press Command/Control plus the Comma Key and the Preferences Window will open on the Lift are Three Categories Application, Autopilot and Shortcuts and under these Categories are Subsections the ones you want are Application then Click on General a larger Window will appear on the Right with the Options for General.

Within the Options you’ll see Lens Corrections and a Toggle Switch simply Click on the Toggle Switch and it will turn Blue indicating it has been Enabled then, Click on the Save in the bottom right corner to save your Preference.

If you’re using Topaz Photo as Standalone Application then, Enabling Lens Correction is a good idea on the other hand, using Topaz Photo as a plugin can cause issues for example, if you have Lens Corrections Enabled with Lightroom Classic and Lens Corrections Enabled with Topaz Photo this may cause a conflict because, although Lens Corrections sounds like a universal feature different Software may have slightly different solutions to the problem.

So, using Topaz Photo as a Plugin it’s a good idea to Disable Lens Corrections within Topaz Photo or Lightroom first.

The problem with Compact Cameras is the Lenses are already Heavily Distorted and the Camera Manufacturers more often than not Embed the Lens Corrections within the RAW Files and JPEG’s and different Applications will either choose to use the Camera’s Correction or just ignore it hence, when you process some Compact Cameras you get really bad Distortion from the Lens and Vignetting from the Cameras Lens Hood for instance.

Hope this helps
