Education | How to avoid artifacts on hands

Topaz AI does a great job on faces, but it really messes up hands. I hope the developers will teach the program to recognize and enhance hands. See the hand in the enhanced photo attached.

Hi Randall.

I used the new Topaz Photo then, Upscaling 4x and used the new Standard MAX Model no other settings no, Denoising, or Sharpening just Upscaling

Hope this helps

Added Denoise and Adjust Lighting

You got great results! I don’t understand what you did. What is the “standard Max model”. Does that mean (when using Topaz Photo AI) you only select the “upscale” enhancement? You do not select “recover faces”, “denoise” “sharpen” or anything else?

As I stated in my previous reply I used the new Topaz Photo not to be confused with Topaz Photo AI and the new Standard MAX Model is only available in that new application.

Yes, I was able to achieve theses results using Upscaling with the new Standard MAX Model and the obligatory Recover Faces.

I did suspected you were only using Topaz Photo AI not because you posted in the Photo AI Category but, because you mentioned Topaz AI and that’s why I returned the image in the same resolution for you to download.

In addition, I can’t emphasize enough how much difference that one model can make to improve images as you can see.

If you’re interested in the new Topaz Studio collection have a word with Topaz Support here’s the link

I guess I need to figure out how to subscribe to “Topaz Photo” as opposed to “Topaz Photo AI”. This is all very confusing. I thought I purchased the best they had to offer, but NO. I bought the wrong program. I feel like I have been the victim of some sort of scam.

Thank you for your efforts to enlighten me. I feel kind of stupid. I just want to enhance pictures, and I would like to buy a program that will do that.

Randy Trahan

No scam, My friend and don’t feel stupid it’s been confusing for all of us to say the least.

Please use the link above and contact Topaz Support they are really good people and I’m sure they’ll be able to help get this sorted out they won’t reply today probably Monday now

In the meantime if there’s anything you want ask please don’t hesitate

Andy

Here’s an output from Photo AI (not Topaz Photo), that’s not bad considering the quality of the original. It doesn’t suffer from the hand artifacts.

Great job Alan, for Photo AI although the fingers aren’t as good and your mage is softer especially in the clothes and I only applied a 4x Upscaling only using the new Standard MAX Model in Topaz Photo for my original image and then, added Denoise plus Adjust Lighting and Recover Faces for the second image

Obviously, I could have done a lot more but, I wanted to demonstrate the power of the new Standard MAX Model and you have to admit with only one model being applied it’s pretty incredible.

Andy

Yes, but without the additional denoise (your first example) it also shows the weakness of the Max model applying snake-skin like textures everywhere - see the girls shirt.

There’s always a starting point but, if it gets me seventy percent of where I won’t to be I’ll take that as a win

I find the Standard MAX model can be good, but can also look unnatural at times, such as creating odd textures, as jo.vo said. I often prefer a softer image if sharper detail doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.

In reality, to do a full photo restoration, I would use multiple model outputs from GP and create a composite in Photoshop.

My actual advice to the OP would be to spend a bit more time learning what the models are capable of, and what causes the artifacts to appear (it probably wasn’t the upscaling in the OP’s first post).

Good strong advice Alan.

There’s no one model that’s going to be the one perfect solution and as I basically said if gets my part of the way there that’s great and I totally agree, with you that, combining several models application and technics can achieve remarkable results and learning how the different models behave on different images and how they can affect and interact with one another gives us a better understanding of how achieve our final goal.

For example, I believed in my haste, to finish the image the texture artifacts were caused because, I simply Upscaled the original small noise image with the Standard MAX Model and the original noise was part of the problem hence, my decision to apply Denoising and Brightening the image after and I have now leaned as, you say and jo.vo pointed out the artifacts were a side effect of using the new Standard MAX Model so, thank you for that.

If there’s one thing I leaned from this community we still have much to learn.

Andy

Thank you very much for your advice. I should be able to get straightened out by talking to Topaz tech support.

That’s great news Randy

Hello Randall.

I’m afraid you have been using the wrong tool for the job. Have you tried using Superfocus? It’s in both Photo AI and Photo and works the same in both.

Regards.

Then I used Gigapixel AI Redefine to add a bit more detail.

Regards.

Hi Robert.

Great job the name of this Topic is

Education | How to avoid Artifacts on Hands

May I ask it would be helpful if you could further explain how you achieved your results including Setting used so, that others who are having the similar issues may learn from your experience.

Thank you

Hello And-e

I’ll be very happy to oblige but just need a bit of time to just recover after having had a rather nice, large breakfast with friends, before I do it.

Best regards Robert.

Hello. As requested by And-E and to maybe help randall.trahan and any other new or inexperienced forum members, instructions for restoring his picture of a girl “Original” and to remove distortion and get more detail into her hand.

For the purpose of this exercise I will be using Photo AI 4.0.0 to show Randall that it is a perfectly good program.

I use Photo AI as a stand alone on Windows 11, using an under powered laptop regarding Low Vram, as I’m always being reminded by Ange.

Processes:

I opened the “000 Original (1)” picture in Affinity Photo 2 to repair the damage to the girl’s hair by using a clone tool and blur brush so that it matches the softness of the rest of the picture.

The back of the girl’s left arm is soft and indistinct and will cause problems later if I don’t fix it. Again I use a clone tool and blur brush just to firm it up.

The Clone Tool and Blur Brush are simple tools to use and you don’t need to be too precise as Topaz will blend them in when it processes the picture.

Saved the picture as “000 Original (1)a Repaired” and closed it and Affinity.

Open the “000 Original (1)a Repaired” picture in Topaz Photo AI using the settings as shown in the “007a Topaz Settings” picture (Below). Starting with Super Focus first and working UP the list. All the settings except those of the two Denoise filters were set by Topaz.

The picture “007b Mask Settings” (Below) shows three pictures the first one shows a striation that has occurred on the girl’s arm during processing despite my efforts in Affinity. The 2nd and 3rd pictures shows the masks I painted in and the Denoise settings used as shown in picture 007a Topaz Settings to remove the striations.

NOTE: The second and third pictures shown in the 007b Mask Settings file, shows the masking that I applied in RED to the girl’s left arm in order to remove noise from her arm only. Only these areas will be Denoised when the filter is applied. To apply the mask click on the arrow next to the AUTO SELECTION and select CUSTOM from the pull down list. Next click on EDIT SELECTION and use the Paint /erase brush to paint in the area that as shown. After that select CONTROLS and set the denoise amount.

Export Export and Save the picture and prefix its file name with 007c
And there you have a reasonably good picture with an ok hand.
