What type of processing are you carrying out? Upscaling? Frame interpolation? Both or something else? Input file details? Export settings? System details?

Actually the freeze frame issue is happening more often than just around titles. Possibly some kind of cadence. Not sure.

Upscaling from 29.97 NTSC 720x480 Prores422 to 29.97 1920x1080 letterbox.
Export mp4 and Prores 422 mov
Mac Studio M4
Topaz 1.7.1

Which specific AI models are you using? Could we take a look at the source file for testing?

Thanks Margaux for the reply.

I was using Rhea specifically, but I tried them all except the Starlight cloud models. They all have the same freeze frame issues.

I am uploading the full video (15GB) "Pensoyungham-People with a Pencil 100126 SD v40” to your dropbox. Please do not distribute.

This film will be playing at Alcatraz and in San Francisco on October 13th and I would love to see it upscaled to HD with pillarbox.

It looks like your source video’s color tags keep changing mid-stream, and ffmpeg doesn’t handle the switches cleanly.

  • 61,584 frames are tagged SMPTE-170M with unknown primaries.
  • 28,767 frames are tagged BT.709.
  • The tags flip 364 times over the 50 minutes. The flips most likely sit at the edit points between source clips that came in with different tags.

I would recommend converting your input using Handbrake and then try importing the converted version back into the app for processing.

Here are the steps to convert it in the handbrake app:

  1. Drag and drop your video to import it
  2. I recommend going to the “dimensions” tab and under “resolution limit” > none
  3. I also recommend going to the “video” tab and under “framerate (FPS)” > Same as source
  4. Then click “start”

This will ensure that it retains the original resolution and frame rate with the converted file.

Thanks Margaux,

I wonder how the tags got to be this messed up. It was exported from Final Cut Pro in Prores 422.

There is a lot of archive and various types of source media in this project. But you would think the Prores codec would export a consistent frame.

BTW The latest Topaz plugins for Davinci Resolve causes Resolve to crash on start. (NOT GOOD)

Had to remove the OFX plugins for Topaz
