Does anyone have experience with the sharpen feature going... plaid?

I’ve had this problem off and on with Topaz Photo AI for a while now. In the past I’ve been able to get around it by restarting or reinstalling the software, but now that’s topped working.

I can denoise just fine, and I can upscale, but when I sharpen the subject goes all plaid. In case I am the only one who gets the Spaceballs reference, it gets an actual plaid pattern placed on it (either that, or streaked horizontal lines).

My computer well exceeds the system requirements. The original photo is shot in raw. My software is up to date (I’ve also uninstalled and reinstalled).

has anyone else faced this issue? Any tips on resolving it?

Did you think to post an example as plaid is not descriptive of computer processing?

The results are not always the same. On this older shot of a roadside hawk you can see a checkerboard pattern on both the subject identified for sharpening and the background. I’ve upped the exposure to display it more.

On the image I am working on now, just the subject identified for sharpening is affected, and it is streaking and not a pattern. This happens now with every image I try and use the sharpen feature on.

Frankly, I love the reference to “plaid” versus the more traditional “tiling”.
