I’m submitting a new bug report related to a rendering issue that is now completely blocking my workflow in Topaz Video AI.
Issue:
When I click the Render button, the process fails instantly with a pop-up that says:
“Error”
There is no further information provided, making it impossible to troubleshoot from my end.
Key Points:
The same project file rendered perfectly yesterday.
Other project files that worked earlier this week now trigger the same error.
The issue occurs in version 5.4.0, version 6, and other versions I tested—suggesting this is not file- or version-specific.
There have been no changes to my system, files, or workflow between successful renders and the appearance of this error.
Given that this is affecting multiple versions and previously functional files, I am concerned the issue could be tied to external dependencies like model delivery, licensing checks, or server-side systems.

I am requesting this report be reviewed by someone in the technical or development team due to the nature and impact of the issue. Any guidance or next steps would be greatly appreciated, as I am currently blocked from delivering work.
After trying multiple versions, clearing the cache, and adjusting other settings, I found that changing the models directory resolved the error preventing renders from starting.
What worked for me:
I changed the models directory/resources folder in Settings to a new folder.
After restarting the software, the error message no longer appeared, and I was able to proceed with rendering.
While this didn’t resolve all potential issues (and I’m still testing), changing the models directory seems to have removed the immediate roadblock related to the “Error” message.
Steps I followed:
Go to Settings in Topaz Video AI.
Find the models directory/resources folder section.
Set a new location for the models folder, preferably on a simple, accessible path (like a new folder on your desktop or a different drive).
Restart the application and test rendering again.
Hopefully, this helps anyone else encountering the same issue!
Nice trouble shooting! The error is in fact related to a missing backend model file. Sounds like the workaround you shared worked, however, here is another solution that doesn’t require changing the folder location:
If you have any custom presets saved, you will want to copy them over to a different folder (e.g. desktop) as they will get deleted when you uninstall.
Applications > Topaz Video AI > right click and Show package contents > Contents > Resources > Presets
I gave your method a try, but unfortunately deleting the plist files didn’t resolve the issue on my end. It also didn’t delete the presets, which you mentioned might happen.
What did resolve the issue was the approach I shared earlier—changing the models directory to a new location. That consistently removed the error message and allowed rendering to proceed.
I’m wondering if your instructions might be missing a step? You mentioned uninstalling, but the steps provided don’t include that part—perhaps that’s where the discrepancy lies.
Happy to keep testing if there’s anything else you’d like me to try!
