Converting Raw files to DNG create substantially darker images

I wanted to improve some portraits and the exported picture was way darker than the original, that has not been edited yet.

  1. i analyzed one photo
  2. i copied the settings to all photos
  3. exported as dng

Topaz Photo AI [v2.2.2] on [Mac]

iMac27_2019_raggam.spx (5.7 MB)
topaz_log_raggam.zip (181.1 KB)

Some minor color/exposure shift is expected with Topaz Photo AI at the moment. We are not able to perfectly preserve exposure, colors, and white balance but we get as close as we can to the original.

The File > Plug-in Extras > Process with Topaz Photo AI method has two functionalities:

  • sending a Raw (non-DNG) file will import the Raw directly and output a new DNG file always
  • sending a DNG or non-Raw file (JPG, TIF, PNG) will give the option to create a copy of the image or overwrite the existing image

If you send a Raw and a DNG file then the Raw will import directly and output a DNG file, the DNG file will display a popup to let you decide to overwrite or edit a copy.

Thanks for the answer!
Almost a full stop of exposure difference is a lot. Most pictures come out fine, but this was an extreme result.

I don’t know what you wanted to tell me in the second half of your answer as exporting a raw to a dng was my intended result.

That’s true, we are constantly updating our training models so with time this should be improved!
