Confusion Around Subscription vs Perpetual License Access

I cancelled my subscription which ran out a few months ago. According to this email from support which says “if you ever decide to cancel auto-renewal, you’ll still keep the perpetual license to the version you already own prior to September 16, but won’t receive future Studio features and improvements unless you re-subscribe at the pricing available at that time.” That sounds like I will still be able to use the program but not entitled to any updates. Is this correct? When I tried to use the app, I got a box telling me to renew my subscription which cannot be closed. Am I still able to use this or not?

Hi Craig.

Yes, No and it depends

Yes, during the changeover from Perpetual Licenses to the Subscription Model or from the old discontinued Topaz AI versions to the new Topaz Studio versions.

If your Licence was still active during the changeover then, Topaz allowed everyone with an active License to use the new Topaz Studio versions of their software I repeat while your old Perpetual License was still active.

No, you won’t be able to continue using the new version because, once your Perpetual License Expired the Studio versions would stop working and you would have to revert back to the old Topaz AI version you were using before the changeover.

For example; you were using Topaz Video AI before the changeover then, during and after the changeover you Downloaded and installed the new Topaz Video Studio version.

But, now your Licence has Expired you have to Download and Reinstall the old Topaz Video AI which is yours to use and keep.

So, you need to either Download Topaz Video AI from the My Products within your Account or from the Release pages on this forum.

The question is can he use the “old” V7 with Starlight, without subscription, I think Starlight is not working into V7 anymore without subsciption, but I’m not sure. If this works I recommend stay there Starlight into Studio Edition is not better.

You have passed the “founder action” When you subscribe, you have to go with “annual commitement” means auto renewal otherweise you must take the expensive Pro version for using Starlight. Topaz Video - Cinematic-Grade Video Quality Enhancement Software

I’m still not following exactly how this applies. I have both version 1.0.1 topaz video and 7.1.4 “topaz video AI) which were both installed before my subscription ran out. 7.1.4 works but starlight mini is not available for local rendering. So am I to understand that topaz is disabling that enhancement unless I get a new subcription?

At one point, I would have answered this question with a confident ‘No, you should not have to re-subscribe to use Starlight Mini in Video AI 7.1.x’. It was, after all, INTRODUCED in Video AI 7.something, which is supposed to be the last ‘perpetual, paid-for’ version. If they have yanked that away from owners without a subscription, that’s a clear reversal of their promise.

What they pitched was that Video AI 7.1.5 was the last version for non-subscribers, and that it would receive occasional bug fixes, but no new features. When I last used my Video AI 7, it worked, although there was a forced update of the Starlight Mini model. It only worked for local processing with nVidia GPUs on the PC platform, and it did not include Starlight Sharp. This was my understanding of where perpetual users were left standing.

I fully understand your confusion. With the horrific way TL conducted this transition, I don’t know what to believe or say anymore. I’ll be following this topic to see if you get an answer from someone at TL.

That would definitely be robbery or fraud. As Starlight was introduced long before that „Studio“/subscription thing came.

The users that bought because of Starlight were promised a „lifetime“ license at that time.

If I’m interpreting this correctly, it’s even worse. 871$ / year you must take the pro to get local starlight? Please tell me that’s not the case. I did take advantage of the founder deal for me it fits, but re or new subscribers get plucked like chickens.

So it looks to me like without a subscription, you don’t have access to Starlight mini. I have version Video 1.0.1 which I’ve used Starlight on my Mac successfully. Now since my subscription ran out 4 weeks ago, I’m basically stuck with Video AI and no Starlight. That was an expensive 300 bucks I spent just over a year ago for a product that was promised for months and only available for a few weeks to me.

The perpetual license that you purchased for Video AI is yours to continue using as long as you are running the app on a compatible computer system. This includes any models or tools that were available in that release of the version you are using or have installed. This includes Starlight for users who have an Nvidia GPU system as that was the only version available in the last release of Video AI 7.1.5.

The new app Topaz Video is only subscription based only, and when a subscription is canceled or expires a user is no longer able to access that app, its models or tools without starting a new subscription plan. Also if you have Founder access and you let the subscription expire, or you cancel it, you will lose that Founder access tag and the discounted price that was locked in.

If you have any further questions about your account directly, please email the support team at help@topazlabs.com so we can take a look at your account and go from there.

In all fairness, despite my critical comments about the chaos surrounding the transition to subscriptions, this part of it was pretty clear to me.

This is where I feel ripped off. If the PC version of Video AI has starlight mini, then it should also be included in the Mac version.

Thanks for clarifying.

RTX 5090 mod with 96GB Vram. Could someone order them? I don’t want to take the risk  EDIT: ups sorry wrong threat

so i can no longer use this version?

I can only use Video AI 7.1.5? this has got to be the worst transitions to subscriptions

Hi.

Topaz Video AI 7.1.5 is the Perpetual License version

Topaz Video 1.0.4 is the Subscription only version

If you you don’t currently have a subscription then, yes you are correct you don’t have access to Topaz Video 1.0.4 only Topaz Video AI 7.1.5 please check your Account which will tell you which version you have access to.

The only caveat, is if your current Licence is still valid then you have access to Topaz Video 1.0.4 until your License Expires then, you can revert back to Topaz Video AI 7.1.5 because that’s the version you own.

If on the other hand you do indeed have a Subscription then, you should have access to Topaz Video 1.0.4 without any issues.
