The current film grain seems to be luma based, IE black and white grain. This leads to whites and bright colors coming out extra grainy while dark scenes and saturated colors are not nearly as grainy, which makes it difficult to strike a balance with grain amount.
A chroma or color based grain would be really helpful in evening out the grain across different brightness levels and colors.
