I am using Topaz Video 1.0.3. For the past few weeks I have been capturing videos in ProRes 422 HQ format using Davinci Resolve 20.2.2 or Blackmagic Media Express, both set to 24 bit 48 kHz audio. The resulting files play fine on their own. But after upscaling in Topaz neither the previews nor the final output have audio. I have changed to AAC converting but to no avail. Checking with MediaInfo the resulting files are missing the audio tags as well.
It doesn’t seem to matter what format the videos are packaged in. This problem negates my use of the tool after more than a year and a subscription.
Nah. Tested with a short video clip with 48kHz 24-bit audio here, and it worked just fine, both with copying and converting. The little clip was also rendered out in Resolve Studio 20.2.2. So not sure what it could be… Are you also on Windows? 10 here.
Well here is what I have learned so far. I finally uninstalled several of my video tools and reinstalled Topaz Video 1.0.3 on a much cleaner system. I have been testing many possible causes. I have tried AAC encoding, I have tried 16 bit 48K audio. I have tried shorter video clips. But I still have one long file one that simply won’t create audio.
I am doing all I/O to an SSD, and will try a standard hard disk overnight to see if that works better. As I said before I have been using this tool for almost 2 years now and this is the first real problem I have had, and it didn’t start until I was doing these video captures in Davinci 20.2.2 and Blackmagic Media Express. It is a different video workflow that before for most of that work was from DVD or Bluray sources, or even online videos. Both of the tools used for capture run 24 bit 48K, including the Blackmagic Mini Converter Analog to SDI converter I use which is hard wired at 24 bit 48K.
I just upscaled two 52 minute videos using Proteus and Rhea from a captured Betamax tape, which was captured at NTSC format interlaced. I deinterlaced using Vapoursynth in the Hybrid tool for that step. Then upscaled in Topaz Video to 1920x1080. The second upscale is almost finished right now as I type this message.
At this point I don’t know if the problem is fixed or not as previously the shorter 52 minute episodes of this video program worked. I will run the edited Davinci Resolve file again (where I connect three episodes each approx 52 minutes long into one file). That file is 2hours and 32 minutes long and it is the one with no audio.
It is almost like the tool cannot deal with a file that long, as it failed to write the metadata for the audio tracks when viewed with MediaInfo. Perhaps Topaz Video didn’t write the whole file correctly. I will report back after an overnight attempt an up conversion. It takes overnight or more when upscaling something this long with Rhea model.
I suppose I could upscale the three segments first, and then edit them together in Davinci Resolve afterwards.
Getting the same results, including only x1 exports, incorrect codec (should be Prores 422 HQ mov) with a downloaded YouTube clip h264, mp4 wrapper on a M3 MacBook ProMax fully loaded.
My apologies. I wasn’t clear. My results> No audio, original 1080 resolution not the x2 resolution selected, incorrect wrapper and one very hot GPU, even with low power on in Topaz.
So nether of my overnight upscales of my 2-1/2 hour show have audio but the video looks great.
Codec settings for the final version is H265 at 40 MBits. I have converted and scaled hundreds (literally) videos to H265 with no issues before this. I don’t frankly know if it is the ProRes input file or the output CODEC but something is still not working for sure.
As a test I am upscaling the ProRes input to a ProRes output as a test of the output CODEC.
I would appreciate very much anyone else who might be able to reproduce this problem so we can enter a true bug report.
I also have to run all my CPU and GPU fans at increased speeds when I do the upscaling. I am on Windows 11 Pro, using a GeForce RTX3060 for my graphics card and hardware acceleration.
I converted three files overnight, a short family video and the original 2-1/2 hour with two different codecs. The short video has audio, the two large ones do not. I have attached the requested log file.
If you need access to the actual video files, I can load them into my dropbox account and send a link.
Thank you David. The logs are showing that the command line is set to copy and bring the audio over for the export.
In my short tests I was not able to replicate this with ProRes files In and Out.
If youc an send me the video source, I will run some tests so we can push a full bug report to the devs for review.
You can securely submit your file(s) to our Dropbox using the link below. Please be sure to send me a note to let me know you sent something and include the file name.
I do not see the problem on short files, even up to an hour long, But this particular video is 2 hrs and 32 minutes long and it converts without audio everytime I run it.
