I think everything should work out if you install kvm and install windows on it and run programs from topaz labs in it since kvm gives direct access to the CPU and GPU
At the point youāre installing windows, how is that linux support?
Native linux support please.
Everything is fine with Linux, but itās still better to install Windows on another disk and make a dual boot and work with these programs in it
When Microsoft stopped issuing security upgrades for Windows 7, I switched to Linux. It was amazing how much faster an more efficient it was, even on the same hardware. Windows 10 forces users to let Microsoft do what they want when they want ā itās like giving away your computer and your privacy, so it was never an option!
Linux is a great OS, but there is a lack of good pro-grade photo processing software. I was able to make some of my Topaz plug-in filters work with Wine (which allows some Windows software to run on Linux), but AI was never an option. A key point is that your competitors are also missing on Linux. Topaz would make a splash and have an immediate market in the Linux community.
(I eventually went to Mac, with photo processing being one of the main reasons and since bought all of the various Topaz AI software, but would still like it to run on my Linux box. Many other LInux users lack this option, and truly need Topaz there.)
TPAI actually runs quite well under Wine/Linux, at least on my hardware. It does use my old Intel HD Graphics 530 GPU, but I havenāt tried it with newer more powerful GPUs.
Iām currently running TPAI v2.4.0 under Wine v9.4 and I think that it would run under Wine v9.0 but probably not much older versions. I have successfully used a few combinations of Wine versions (9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and 9.4) and TPAI versions (2.3.0, 2.3.1, 2.3.2 and 2.4.0).
The catch is that the installer doesnāt quite work:
- Run it until it says that it āended prematurely because of an errorā.
- At that point, donāt click on āFinishā or close the window. If you do, it will remove everything it just installed. Instead kill the process from a terminal (or use something like āxkillā) to terminate the installer without letting it finish.
- Then start the installer again. This time it should offer to repair the installation. Select that option and then it should work. At least it does on my computer.
I have posted some screenshots here.
In response to your previous two posts, the newer versions still fail during installation for me however I can confirm that I was able to download models from within the app. Also progress seems like its being made with Nvidia GPUS. In gpu mode it will process images but the output images are just blurry and unusable, however face enhance seems to work. In other words, I can get blurry images but an enhanced face in GPU mode, which is new.
I have not encountered that problem; once Iāve managed to install the program, the resulting images have met or exceeded my expectations. I have not processed a huge number of images, perhaps 30-50 or so in total, using different versions of TPAI. In most cases I have started with a RAW image and applied a minimal amount of noise removal and/or sharpening.
I donāt have a NVIDIA GPU so I have not tested that. My nine year old Intel HD Graphics 530 is recognized and put to work.
I have not seen how well TPAI works on Windows/Mac, but performance doesnāt seem to be an issue on my Intel i7-6700 (8) @ 4.000GHz with 16GB RAM. Iām sure it would be faster on newer hardware, but as long as the resulting images are good, Iām not complaining if I have to wait a few seconds longer than someone with more powerful hardware and an OS that is fully supported.
I wonder whether the issues you are seeing are related to that particular combination of Wine and NVIDIA GPU? In other words, does TPAI generally work under Wine except with certain GPUs or is the problem primarily related to NVIDIA? I have seen forum posts indicating that some people have had problems with certain NVIDIA GPUs even under Windows and/or macOS, but I havenāt studied the issue. Have you tried using TPAI under Windows on the same machine? You mentioned earlier that you downloaded model files using Windows, but I donāt know whether that was on the same machine.
Are you still using Bottles or are you now using plain vanilla Wine v9.x? I was never able to get the most recent versions of TPAI to work with the slightly older version of Wine that Bottles was (and still is?) based on.
Yes I still use Bottles. The Caffe runner is usually pretty up to date (currently based on WINE 9.2) and Soda (which is the default runner in Bottles) is usually a little behind because it is based on Valveās Proton. You can also install other runners such as Glorious Eggrollās. To clarify, the issue I described is when trying to use the GPU; CPU still works fine for me.
I see. So the GPU problem is probably somewhat specific to NVIDIA since Intel graphics cards generally seem to work. I donāt know about AMD, but VuPa JJ reported a problem with AMD 5700x + RX 6600 XT, and I donāt know whether that issue has been resolved.
Sounds good. I also noticed that Wine v9.4 included upgraded graphics support (new version of vkd3d and OpenGL support in the Wayland driver) so hopefully the situation will improve.
Iām for too.

The only thing which has stopped me from buying the software right now is lack of Linux native support. Hopefully itās gonna change soon ![]()
An update: Now I am able to run Photo AI and Gigapixel without any of the extra settings or dependencies I previously listed above. They both work out of the box with a default bottle (just make sure you set a recent wine runner such as kron4ek-wine-9.9). Even more exciting is they finally work with my Nvidia GPU!
Native Linux support for the Topaz suite would a very welcome option.
Agreed! Native Linux support would be fantastic. Making it free or opensource is not a requirement for any Linux program.
Any chance you could export your settings and share them? Iām unable to get Photo AI to install. I have tried an out-of-the box bottle with various runners, but they all fail during the install process.
I should clarify. While you no longer need to download any extra dependencies, the install work around from my guide above still applies. When you get the error during installation, kill the the install process using āforce stop all processesā in the bottle menu (top right). The models should download in app once you run it.
Furthermore the app is unstable for me when importing images. I get a lot of segfaults and crashes. I have no real fix for this other than I have found it to be a bit more stable when using the single image view rather than the default dual image view.
I also just got it to work with Photo AI 3.0.3 in the flatpak version of bottles. Denoising, color balance and exposure correction seem to work fine (with very limited testing on my end), but selecting the upscaling option produces a blurry preview image, which unfortunately also carries over into the final exported image. Other than that, everything feels very responsive and I havenāt experienced any crashes yet.
Like was already reported by other people, the install will fail on the first try, so you need to terminate all processes in bottles and then retry the installation. On the second attempt, select the repair option.

I can confirm. On AMD GPUs the output is still blurry. Only NVIDIA is working at the moment due to the latest DXVK version.
Furthermore in my experience all 3.0+ versions are unstable and should be avoided. Todays release flat out broke functionality. The last reasonably stable version is 2.4.2.
Please create a native Linux installer. Or at least make it so that we can use it with wine/lutris/steam/bottles or the like.
I would happily prolong my license, but as I got rid of all the Adobe crap, i will not switch back to windows just because of Topaz.
Pleasepleaseplease, make it work under Linux!
Tom,
I agree completely, though I ended up switching to Mac due to unavailability of professional-quality photo software on Linux. Though Linux is a relatively small segment of the computing world, it is growing and will continue to grow as it improves and Windows continues to get worse. The Linux machine became my secondary, but it would be nice to run Topaz on it, and for others to have access to this great software.
And yes, life is much better without Adobeās overpriced bloatware!
