1.3.11 Rainbow / color artifacts when Remove Noise module is active

When trying to upscale one specific image (smiths-rank.jpg, provided below), Photo AI v1.3.11 produces very strange, colorful artifacts if noise removal is activated with Normal or Strong models. The artifacts aren’t present if Extreme model or no noise removal is selected.

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Load “smiths-rank.jpg” image in Photo AI v1.3.11 and let the app calculate the Autopilot settings.
  2. Set the Enhance Resolution model and the output resolution to whatever you please.
  3. Activate the Remove Noise toggle and choose Normal or Strong models. The bug will manifest.
  4. Choose Extreme noise removal model and the app works as expected.

P.S.: I don’t if the image provided will be reencoded or not. So, let me know if I should upload in another place, so you can reproduce the bug for yourselves.

Topaz Photo AI v1.3.11 on Windows

I can reproduce this here on Mac Studio M2Ultra.
So it is not GPU or OS specific.

I was able to reproduce this as well on my Windows device even after converting the file to PNG and TIF.

I reported this to my team so we can look into this artifact.

Here’s another image that also produces strange artifacts when Noise Reduction is active.

This is a known artifact with images that have this texture/pattern.

You can use the Remove Noise - Extreme model to avoid this behavior.

The issue with the image in the thread starting post still exists with TPAI 1.5.0.

The input file has a checkerboard pattern that we did not train the model to handle. This is causing an artifact with the Remove Noise - Normal and Strong models.

The Remove Noise - Extreme model does not have this issue.

At this time, we are working on updating the Remove Noise Raw models. We are not planning on retraining the Remove Noise models yet.
